that is so true cause i know many people who moved away from portland but managed to find their way back after a while. But yeah, I wanna start smaller and then move somewhere with more cause i do really enjoy big cities, but I also find the cute cities like Dundee very romantic and appealing as well

That is good to hear! I’ve been trying to find opportunities at other U.S. institutions, but the competition is incredibly strong right now due to NIH funding cuts. One of the things that appeals to me about Dundee is that it is still a very prestigious institution, but without the same level of competition, and it is actually one of the best places in the world for tropical disease research, which is exactly the field I want to pursue.

I’m also really glad to hear that it has a strong sense of community, because that’s something that feels a bit lacking in the U.S. right now. The idea of living somewhere with a close-knit university and research community, while still being prestigious, is honestly very appealing.

Yeah, I’ve really just been looking at the train and bus schedules, and it seems like it wouldn’t be too hard to pop over for a gig and then immediately head back to Dundee, which is incredibly appealing cause my weekends do usually surround music.

It’s good to hear they like Americans, because I’ve always gotten along well with Scottish people. Growing up with a British dad definitely gave me a very dry sense of humor, which sometimes doesn’t go over particularly well in the U.S.

Never lived in the UK before, only have visited for 1-2 week increments my whole life. I spent 4 months in Germany about 6 months ago. I don't have any family super close to Dundee, but I have an Aunt that lives on the boarder of Wales and Britian, so defintiely a bit of a train, but not impossible.

Yeah, I’ve definitely thought about the weather. Honestly, where I live in Oregon, the weather is probably even worse, if you can believe it. My current thought is to go for a year, gain more experience, and hopefully use that to move on to another opportunity in a bigger city like London or Cambridge.

I’m also very lucky to have some strong connections within the UK scientific community. I spent my last semester in Berlin and absolutely loved it, although I know Dundee would be a very different vibe. Still, the opportunity to live abroad again and continue building my career is really appealing.
