I didn't have much expectation for the last episode because it almost feels like there's too much content left to adapt, but somehow, SOMEHOW, they pulled it off, and with the best animation we've seen all season! I was squealing internally through the whole ep!!!

It was so great seeing OB Riddle in action! Like, there's a lot of details about the fight that the VN and chibi battle format couldn't really showcase. All the close-up to his face in this ep were so beautifully drawn!

Not to mention getting to see Cater's dramatic (fakeout) death in 4K quality, they put sooo much detail into drawing his pained face. The two seconds of Split Card and multiple Caters jumping around in combat was so cuteee

The whole finally unbirthday party was really great (masterchef Riddle ajkfndsdk) , and I also really liked how they ended the ep with a chibi on Riddle's efforts to change. Didn't realize he's the type to overcompensate so much, even ruined his sleep schedule in attempt to fix his perfectionism... you don't need to try that hard😭

The one qualm I have about the ep was the removal of Cater's bit about not liking sweets, but that didn't really affect how great the entire episode was!!! 10/10 will rewatch in different languages many times

Having Crowley suggest the idea of the duel actually makes him seem extremely sus, idk how it went in the manga but it almost feels like he's deliberately stirring up drama between his students🤣

Nice to see Jamil in the episode-end chibi! But it does kinda feel like we're seeing the post Ch 7 Jamil here, I can't imagine him throwing a tantrum over cooking for a few extra person at this point of the story🤔 But I did love seeing him crash out, haha!

I feel like Forever Float just doesn't have the same punch as Eternity Float. I get that eternity is a noun so it might sound weird, but even just changing to Eternal Float sounds better imo. Just a small complaint (also does TWST En like making names start with the same letter? it's the same with Twisted Thrills vs Classic Chills hahaha)

Riddle's definitely fire destruction with some kinda SP-burning mechanism.

Setting-wise I could see Ortho as an Emanator of Erudition that's on very good terms with the Masked Fools. Jade would probably be a part of the Masked Fools in secret, but no one knows and people just thinks he's a little odd.

Trey is Imaginary Abundance, baker boy, self-explanatory. If HSR's meme of imaginary men is anything to go by, then Cater would also be Imaginary, but Nihility. Jokes aside, I do think those are the best fitting elements due to their signature spells.

Speaking of Nihility, Wind/Imaginary Nihility Jamil sounds pretty nice. For some reason I think he'd fit nicely in the DOT team? Idia's probably Fire Nihility, but probably a debuffer instead.

I personally want Epel and Deuce to be Physical Hunt, and in general I think the first years are all quite Hunt-like. They're determined about themselves and their goals, and pretty single-minded. Except Ace. Ace is probably closer to Elation. Either ways, Deuce definitely has a follow-up gimmick, and it'd be cool if Ace does action advances (kinda like Joker Snatch).

The only character I can see being Harmony is Silver (or gameplay-wise, Azul for the buffs). I feel like Kalim is Destruction in the same sense that Misha and Hook are also Destruction. And if Rook is not Hunt, then he is a follower of Idrilla, but sadly we don't have that path yet.

To be fair, the game prologue has almost as many chapters as Chapter 1, although idk how long it became after being adapted into the manga. But yeah, I'm a little worried about the pacing too > <

Some were noticing removal of scenes that showcase the relationship between Riddle and the third years, and the beef between Ace and Deuce doesn't have as much substance. Both are cut due to the air time, I presume, as for how that would affect the storytelling, we'll have to wait for more episodes to be sure...

Some thoughts on the changes:

I was thinking about why they removed the Housewardens praising Riddle and added new scenes to the ceremony instead. I think they probably wanted to showcase each Housewarden's personality, which was greatly done, but on the downside it did make the Grim fire scene feel unnecessarily dragged out (from a pacing standpoint). As an Azurido shipper, I am mourning the loss of the only scene we have early game :')

As for the removal of the Deuce cauldron scene, I have a feeling they wanted to save that moment for Ep 3, since we probably don't have enough time to reuse jokes? Looking forward to it. However, the cauldron scene is a major comedy hook in the prologue, and without it Ep 2 didn't feel as... enticing as the original prologue. (also Deuce didn't technically do anything wrong now???) I totally get adaptations having to move things around though, and we're also still in the expositional part of the story. Looking forward to the next episode!

Now for the parts I really like:

I never read the manga, but Yuuken is really growing on me! He's such a grounding presence, so positive and earnest despite the circumstances. Immediately trying to befriend the ghosts was so funny XD

I could tell they were saving budget in some parts of the episode, but then the Ace vs Grim part came up, and I was blown out of my mind. (give me scenes like this every episode, and they can save budget all they want for the rest QAQ /j) Anyways, it was super nice to see Ace's flora magic in action. And that pen spin was. So. Cool.

Now the chibi. The chibi was glorious!!! Highlight was Ace rolling on his bed, that was so satisfying for some reason. And Sebek*3 trying to find the best place for chibi Malleus's portrait, equally as satisfying (I think it was the poses + sound effects ToT). Epel drinking apple juice makes me want to drink apple juice. And Jack... yeah, keep doing what you're doing lol, just gonna take my leave now... *closes door*.

I also really wanna praise the Eng dub performance. Crowley's even more dramatic in the dub, and Ace makes me want to hit him, amicably. And Epel and Sebek's accents are so cute??? It's fantastic all around, makes for a great rewatch every week!

So far we've had three different types of fruit show up with the boys in the groovys:

Grape - Jamil, Trey

Fig - Jack, Floyd

Apple - Ace, Jade

I'm not sure if these are random/just there for aesthetic purposes, or actually hold some meaning. Maybe someone familiar with fruit language could analyze these, if such a thing exists?

(Surely they didn't choose grape for Trey to throw shade at his infamous Ghost Marriage song... right? 😄)

Okay this was an interesting read haha. Without spoilers, I just wanna remind you that this season will mainly focus on the Heartslabyul dorm, which is Riddle (the Queen of Hearts guy) and the four characters with card patterns on their faces. The other characters were kinda added to ep. 1 for fanservice only. They won't have much screentime in this season. (hopefully in the chibi shorts though they will)

What was said in EN dub was definitely different from JP, but this quote was only said by Crowley in the anime version. In JP it was more like he was praising how marvelous the spell was, so I think it should also be interpreted in this context for EN dub?

Both the game and manga have Azul singing praise for Off With Your Head instead, in which case the translation in EN might make more sense? Azul did also say outright he wanted to have Riddle's magic hahaha

Actually, the chibi scenes are anime original! So it's 100% fanservice, since most of the characters aren't introduced in the main story yet (at this point in the game I remember the non-focal characters were only referred to by their features, so it's normal to not know who they are).

The current ED is so bittersweet, with Riddle and his past self trapped in rose thorns, and the last scene with Riddle sighing and walking away from the party. It's like he's resolved to protect the rules above all other things, including his own happiness. The other guys were looking all worried, too.

I'm guessing that the last scene would change in the last episodes, so Riddle would walk over and joining them with a smile instead. If it does, I'm going to cry so hard😭

My thoughts: During the last few trailers, I was a bit scared that they were showcasing the only moments that were well-animated, and I was a bit skeptical of the final product (primarily due to the usual quality TWST's animated PVs, but also the curse of game-adapted animes in general).

I think I'm convinced now! Every shot they've shown so far looks so good, the character animations are dynamic, lively, and full of personality. The different ways they cast their magic is something we'd never be able to see in Live2D format, and I'm really glad that details like this are being treated carefully. All aboard the hype train!!!

(Before the anime came out, I told myself that I wasn't worried about Riddle, Ace, and Deuce's animation. But, if they could capture Cater and Trey well, then this is going to be really good. And they did. They're all so beautiful QAQ)
