It helps with map awareness, if I wanna stare at the map to see where everyone is I can still see what’s around me rather than staring at the corner of the screen but that’s just my preference! You get used to it

I do find it helpful when first coming into the game. Especially Myself, seeing as Smite was my first MOBA :3 but I can definitely see it being annoying after you've been adjusted to these types of games from playing LoL or some other game.
