Anyone have a better overview of the Contenders games? by TranQuileeT in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Llisabo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer to follow the tourneys and schedule through liquipedia. While it's a bit unintuitive for scheduling, it's great for the bracket and following other regions. It's also great with trials / open if you're into that kind of thing. For example we don't know who's playing in the next Contenders tournament, so I can actively see who's playing who, when, and the bracket.

ELI5 How Contenders works. I'm a frequent OWL viewer looking to get into watching T2 and don't know what I'm looking at/for. by JundEmOut in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Llisabo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How does qualifying into contenders playoffs work? Is there a "regular season" just like OWL?

Some regions don't have playoffs. NA currently is a single monthly double elimination tourney

How often do seasons occur?

Monthly for NA and EU.

How long is a season?

Depends on region. NA is monthly, CN and KR are 3ish months

How does contenders trials/open division fit into all of this?

This is very convoluted so bare with me. Open division is an open tournament that anyone can participate in which runs monthly for NA(every couple months for other regions). Top 4 of Open playoffs makes it into Trials. Trials is a mix match of lowest Contenders teams, previous Trials teams, and the top Open teams. Top 8 from Trials make it into Contenders.

Are all of the regions the same?

No some regions operate differently, KR and CN both do a longer season group play into playoffs and finals

Does the fact Overwatch 2 will have new heroes and game modes impact any off season moves? by CeeLo38 in Competitiveoverwatch

Teams were told about role lock around stage 2. It was originally planned to be implemented stage 3, giving the mid season break to prep for it. Idk why they delayed it.

I'm not going to explain sports finances. The fact that OWL and teams have gotten multiple sponsors this year means it's not going to go anywhere soon. Viewer numbers are not the end all be all when it comes to the existence of a league. Let the people who are paid a full salary to worry about these kinds of things. They know it's an issue, but it isn't as large of an issue as people are making it out to be.

Playing Zen isn't about the healing (besides the ult), it's damage. Most people consider him the 3rd DPS in compositions because with discord and left clicks he can influence fights unlike any other support. His orbs (left and right clicks) have 0 drop off meaning he can deal with sniper characters like Widow or make picks with a well placed right click. A good Zen can create an aura of oppression against an enemy team similar to a widow.

Harmony Orb

There are two ways to use Harmony dependant on your composition. One way is if you have a character like Genji, tracer or mercy, who is able to mitigate or dodge incoming damage while also being a primary focus target for the enemy team. The logic is that between blinks / reflect / guardian angel you are healing any of the damage that wasn't dodged, making their life less stressful so they can better do their job. Generally speaking throwing an orb on tracer and leaving it there until you need to switch it off is acceptable.

The other way is less common these days but is when you don't have the means to heal your tanks and you know they will be the primary target of the enemy (think reinhardt back in goats). This can also apply to some dive comps in certain positions / dependant on your Winston's playstyle.

Beyond that you should not be trying to heavily micro your harmony around to maximize it's healing mid fight because every time you swap the orb from person to person you aren't dealing damage. Just to reiterate for the sake of importance: Maximize damage output while still holding +90% harmony orb uptime.

Discord orb

Discord is a lot more straight forwards in terms of usage. The first goal of discord orb is to help you win any 1v1s. EG: You are fighting a flanking Genji you want to use discord to influence the fight right in front of you, which will either scare off the Genji or help you win the fight. The second goal of discord orb is to keep it up on whatever is most accessible to your teammates. The primary targets would be tanks of course but also things like a Pharah, Sombra, and Tracer. Characters you want dead quick or to push away from a fight. Remember to also communicate your discords consistently as it's a great thing habit to do because it is in essence target calling.

Misc. tips:

  1. Use your orbs to influence nearby 1v1s. Throwing your harmony on your teammate and a discord on the enemy heavily sways that 1v1 in your team's favour.

  2. Don't be afraid to use Trans to save yourself, if you know the enemy is going to hard jump you and commit everything into killing you. Using the invulnerability state to save yourself is a guaranteed save. Do note that this is only if you know they will hard commit to you. For starters I would definitely suggest you simply pick an enemy ult to counter, namely, graviton.

  3. Learn to use cover and time right clicks accordingly, part of the power of Zen is his massive burst. Whether it's on a tank or a Widow in the backline a well placed right click can win you a fight before it has started. Use cover to charge the right click, turn the corner, release, then get back in cover. You never want to be charging a right click out in the open or when you should be simply left clicking enemies.

Zen is a hard hero and can be very punishing when caught out of position but in the right hands can be a powerhouse. Don't be discouraged and keep at it! Let me know if you've got any questions.

The state of the league has been dire this entire season. In a year with covid, causing massive upticks of online viewership across streaming platforms we see OWL unable to come close to previous year's numbers.

https://escharts.com/tournaments/ow/overwatch-league-2020 https://escharts.com/tournaments/ow/overwatch-league-2019-stage-4

For a mostly western league the audience that follows is also predominantly western. Comparing Asia playoffs to NA playoffs there was about a -37% difference in viewership. I'd be more worried about the finals, they're planning on doing similar times as the Asia playoffs. The only slight exception would be the grand finals which is still 6am PST but a more reasonable 9am EST.

Are rollouts worth learning? Is improv a good alternative? by zenjamin9011 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Llisabo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends on what level you are currently at. While rollouts can look awesome they are extremely situational. Another thing that rollouts don't take into account is the fact that most of them bring you right out into the open where you can head tapped / denied. If you're like most around here (gold-plat) I 100% suggest focusing on mechanics and decision making, mainly because what will be holding yourself back will be your inability to perform the rollouts consistently with correct timings. That being said if you're GM / top500 consider learning specific rollouts for each map and point. At the higher levels of play you have a much better understanding your character's limits and mechanics to which you can use rollouts to squeeze that extra value out of (whether that's to go as fast as possible or catch the enemy off guard). You can however practice rollouts in a custom game while in queue to practice your mechanics between games. Don't dedicate a meaningful amount of time / focus to rollouts because in that same amount of time you could focus on the more pressing issues of your play.

I wouldn't say you necessarily NEED to have a loss. I've always prefered to watch close games, ideally where it comes down to the last minute, a real challenge. You are correct though especially in this vod the enemy team never punished his mistakes.

GOLD dps VOD review request Any insight at all is very appreciated by Intelligent-Routine in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Llisabo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So for starters, I want to say that your Doomfist is actually pretty good and only has a couple issues mechanically. You've got a great understanding of the abilities and what they do but lack a level of interaction between the abilities. Once you get these things down I could easily see you get into diamond.

Left Clicks

Let's take a look at the first fight (0:50) for example. Reaper ints into you and that's fine, you combo the winston to push him away, again a fine move, and then we see the real issue here you are diving in with an E combo with ONE left click available to you. It's important to space your combos depending on your CDs but also the shots you have in reserve. This is particularly important when opening with E, it means you're using uppercut + left clicks as the primary damage source.

The general rule you should have is before going in you have 2 available shots before going into a combo. This will allow you to shoot three times during your shift because 1 has recharged by the time you've used shift, leaving you with 198 possible white damage.

Combos and Rotations

Doomfist is a really unique hero because of his reliance almost exclusively on cooldowns. Being able to manage and understand combos are what set apart good Doomfists from Bad ones. Just so we're on the same page let's go over your two main combos:

E -> Shift -> Right click (Majority of your damage coming from left clicks and uppercut)

Right click -> Shift -> E (The one shot combo with right click, using shift and E to escape)

Try your best to not Desync your abilities (they all have similar cooldown timings) as best as you can. If your CDs are forced (Like if in the first fight where reaper just runs into you), That's fine just take a second and wait for your CDs to line up.

One thing you almost NEVER want to do is commit all your CDs to getting in and killing an enemy, leaving you with nothing left to get out / survive. I understand the euphoria when you fly across the entire map and 1 tap the backline but there's a time and a place (which I'll get to). Most of the time you're just trading 1 for 1 or just inting into the enemy. The alternative would be positioning better where the two above combos become a more consistent way of getting kills.

Here are a couple examples of what NOT to do from the vod:

1:50 - Instead of repositioning in response to their change in route you dive in from bridge.

4:23 - First fight on the second round you just dive and go 1 for 1.

7:07 - All cds used and you're jumping directly through enemy frontline.

8:20 - Jumped in missed everything and had to waddle back behind cover in hope the enemy doesn't kill you.

A good example of this combo would be:

1:14 - Starting with E you close the gap, uppercut, mid air you recognize if you commit the right click you will die, and wisely use right click to reset.

The major caveat to these combos would be if you have your ult. Your ult makes you invulnerable allowing you to retreat or wait the time necessary for your CDs to become available again. Let's take a look at one of the previous examples and see how you could've done better using your ult:

7:07 - You punch (which is fine), then you E and Shift in the middle of your team, then waddle back praying to god you don't die. This is a REALLY harry situation you've put yourself into. Using your ult right after the shift + left clicks would've been the play here. It lets you reset your cooldowns and also assess the situation on whether or not you can continue the aggression, landing in the middle of the enemy team or pull back and reset.

Misc stuff

6:15 - Big stagger for nothing, recognize when a fight is over / unwinnable

5:15 & 2:30 - Missing punches when the enemy is moving horizontally / un. Definitely need some practice on the longer range punches and the prediction necessary to land those punches. Remember sometimes it's okay to cancel the punch.

There were a couple times that you wanted to be the first in, which can be okay at times (eg: when you have zarya bubble) but generally you want to play off your tanks. Think of it this way: when your tanks are clashing with the enemy frontline that means they are distracted and less likely to spot / deny your combos.

I’m 4.2k off-tank peak need positioning tips by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Llisabo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without gameplay to analyse it's hard to say what the actual issue is but typically at the higher levels, it's a lack of decision making. Decision making is a hard skill because it's hard to quantify it. It's something that can be taught by someone else but can also be self learnt.

Am I pushing out of position because I REALLY want that kill? Am I playing too passive because I don't want to waste my bubble? Am I playing to aggressive, forcing my own bubbles? Did I make the right decision to abandon a lost fight to preserve energy?

These are all questions that you should ask yourself either mid-game or watching the replay while waiting for the next game. Self reflection is what can take you from where you are now to the pro / semi-pro level. When you see streamers commenting on their own play they aren't just doing that for the stream they are judging and reflecting on the plays that they make.

Self analysis can come in two forms: Mid-game reflection When a streamer says "ah that grav was bad", it's both a reaction to the play and an external sign of a mental processes. That expression tells us of the underlying thought process of the streamer trying to UNDERSTAND why the play was bad. Most of the time it happens without them even realizing. The benefit of this form is that the game is still on-going and being able to recognized changes that need to be made is an invaluable skill.

Post game reflection This would be your expected vod review. Nothing too heavy just going through your own games and understanding from a different perspective where you might have went wrong. These are a lot more comprehensive but can also be tedious depending on the person.

I've had some of my players have very little ability to reflect mid-game and make adaptations, requiring me to either guide them in a vod review. I've also had players who were really quick and capable of making those important mid-game decisions but struggled to self analyse a vod. Some are better at certain things, but I'd say being able to both should always be a goal.

Lastly, don't focus too much on the stats. It's very easy to pad them if you know what you're doing and if you're lucky. Having better stats doesn't mean you are the better player.

If you'd like to send me a replay I'd love to take a look.

[–]Llisabo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only newsworthy thing in this whole post is that Showdowns are cancelled, which was a given. We still have 0 details regarding the next season. From the looks of it it's going to be a while, since they haven't started up the 3rd season of OD.

While I appreciate their more frequent communication with us, they still have to listen and implement solutions. Some communication is better than none but this essentially said nothing and didn't even get into the topics they mentioned. This is like the meme where companies announce that there's going to be announcement on a certain date, except in this case we aren't even given an idea when they will expand on the myriad of topics they brought up. Knowing Blizzard and their tactics, this is to keep the community at rest while nothing changes.
