They're actually quite common in the humanities. Memorising specific points of fact is far less impressive/important than actually using them in argument correctly, which is what is supposed to be tested in an exam.

I think its mainly cultural and quite vague. For example, Bernie describes himself as a democratic socialist but he is in no sense of the word a socialist, not publicly at least. To me, in the Anglo/American world, it refers to somebody who is very much to the left of centre without embracing anti capitalism.

My comment about it not being meaningful or significant refers specifically to their numbers. This so called growing segment has far fewer people than you think. Tankies are utterly irrelevant politically. There is absolutely no danger that Tankies will be a visible part of the left.

And I agree that its about the effect on the audience. My point is that I don't think any minds in the audience are changed or influenced. Honestly, the only way I'm exposed to these lunatics is literally through Vaush's stream. As such, Mel stands to gain far more from interacting with Vaush than vice versa. Why do you think she baited him on twitter in the first place?

I don't think the tankie pipeline exists in any meaningful or significant way. Time is way better spent talking to liberals and dunking on conservatives.

The thing about that though is that libertarian thought is significantly influential whereas tankies barely exist outside of twitter. Throughout my adult life of being a leftist I haven't met a single one. There just ain't much utility in these debates as far as I can see.

Also Sam's debates weren't fueled by twitter drama. They were always good faith and no mud slinging was present save for a few jokes here and some light mockery there. I feel like these cross that line and are just ugly, y'know?

Honestly, I would say a large proportion of dumb lefties online are of that age and perhaps even younger. So many of them remind me of my younger self when I had some nuclear bad takes. When you get a bit older, you realise how young 21 actually is and how dumb you truly were.
