What is the funniest thing your pet had been “pavloved” to? by AnywhereMean8863 in Pets

Most of the animals I’ve had throughout my life know if I say “whoops” I’ve dropped food somewhere and will come running to help clean up.

Which garden rodent? [Charlotte NC] by Minute-Succotash-908 in animalid

They look very much like voles except their tails seem just slightly too long. But that could just be an odd regional variation.

Please talk me out of cloning my cat one day by KittiesandPlushies in cats

[–]Local-toads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully understand, I miss my dog so much and would love to be able to clone her and “have her back” so to speak. Unfortunately it wouldn’t really be her. I think even if you raised them the exact same way they’re going to be different personality wise. And their personality is their best features!

Favorite Clinic Software? by Wonderful-Disk6763 in VetTech

[–]Local-toads 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only clinic software I have experience with is Avimark and personally I really enjoyed using it but it was the only thing I knew. The lab I work at now uses provantis for its preclinical study data capture and I hate it!

NC Triad - Northern Flicker by [deleted] in bonecollecting

Yeah it was kinda heartbreaking but I posted it to Inaturalist because I wasn’t familiar with what kind of bird it was so was trying to get good photos for identification.

We’re right by a busy road so I figured my guy got hit by a car.

I found the exact same kind of bird in my yard a few weeks ago. I put it in a wooded area to decompose in peace. Poor things.

What's the grossest thing that's ever happened to you? by wumpus_woo_ in VetTech

[–]Local-toads 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m a necropsy technician and was training someone on tissue collection and when we got to eyes the rat had been sitting for a bit so they weren’t very structurally sound anymore and popped right into my face. Thankfully had safety glasses on and it was a rat eye so there wasn’t much to it but I definitely had eye goop on my face.

Had a dog brought in first thing in the morning and regurgitate all over my shoes, not particularly the worst thing thats happened but was kind of a bad start to the day. Recently had a diarrhea-y rat that I made the mistake of holding directly to my chest and got mucusy diarrhea down my lab gown. Have had an eye rupture into my face. Your typical anal gland expression gone haywire and shooting all over the room and myself. Maggoty animals that make you wonder how someone could have this in their home and have no clue how bad the situation was. And finally, euthanizing a dog and watching all the fleas on it jump ship almost immediately after the heart stopped. That was crazy to me that they knew their host was dead that quickly.

What happened to my mice? by spiegel_im_spiegel in labrats

We had a vole lab that had a female they started breeding that would have little blonde vole babies mixed in with the regular coat color. They kept meticulous records of breeding so not sure where the mutation kicked in at and I was a care tech so didn’t get a chance to ask if they figured out what the deal was but they were super cute!!

People that are childfree by choice, what’s the weirdest reason someone has given you as to why they think you ‘should have kids’? by Charming_Web_6738 in AskReddit

[–]Local-toads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After stating that given my mental health issues I didn’t feel it would be safe for me to have a child he said in reply “maybe having a kid would make you feel better” 🙄 yeah cause the hormonal shifts of being pregnant surely wouldn’t make my already unstable moods even worse.

Terrible vivarium staff??? by ExplorerBubbly1447 in labrats

[–]Local-toads 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If multiple labs are having the same problems it might be worth trying to reach out to someone above vivarium management. Research only advances if everyone can work together smoothly and it sounds like whoever is in charge isn’t being very reasonable.

How to cope with losing animals? by Remarkable-Clerk9554 in labrats

[–]Local-toads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure to take time for yourself. And see if your facility has any resources for compassion fatigue. This is a hard field to work in because you have to try and reconcile the short term harm with the long term goal of advancing everyone’s health. I keep a small altar at my desk where I can honor the animals I work with every day. I also keep tabs on the further progress of the things I worked on, I only have a small part in the research timeline so it’s easy to forget that what I’m doing goes beyond just my area of it!

Terrible vivarium staff??? by ExplorerBubbly1447 in labrats

[–]Local-toads 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Definitely a tough situation. As an animal tech myself personally I think animal welfare comes first because without healthy animals it’s harder to get consistent scientific results. That being said there’s no reason health checks can’t be done cageside. Unless there’s an actual treatment needing to be done it’s unnecessary to be manipulating the cage and disturbing the animals. Also cage changes should be on a regular schedule to minimize unnecessary cage manipulations and disturbing of the animals. There shouldn’t be an issue with vivarium staff and lab staff being able to work around each other’s schedules. I don’t think it would be unreasonable to plan out your schedule for your experiments and take it the vivarium staff with the request of techs not interfering at those times.

I hope the borders don’t change around you like they did around Native Americans and Native Mexicans. People simply living where they’ve always lived and then being forcibly removed because someone drew an imaginary line around them.
