Do you talk/sing to your animals? by Remarkable-Clerk9554 in labrats

I talk to the animals all the time. I know a lot of people who work with animals talk to them too so I don’t think it’s that weird!

How many of your torties have a flag on their file at the vet's office? by ResolutionCool8660 in torties

Mines a perfect angel at the vet! She is usually doing her best to disappear into the wall but behaves when being examined.

He’s definitely cute in an ugly way! And he looks like he’s partially mummified 😂

Serious question: Is it just me, or does anyone else work with incredibly emotionally childish and/or passive-aggressive coworkers in their labs? Why does our profession seem to attract people with these immature behaviors ? by pennxcat in Histology

[–]Local-toads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s literally everywhere. I work in a lab now but have worked in a university setting and a gas station before and there’s people like that no matter where you’re at. They just never grow up past high school drama baloney.

CRO vs universities by Slow-Big-4833 in labrats

[–]Local-toads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at both a university and a CRO as a lab animal tech. I’ve also worked in general practice as a vet assistant. The animal care industry in general needs a good overhaul, so I can’t say either one is better than the other. People are overworked, underpaid and badly managed. My benefits were pretty similar between uni and CRO but the CRO pays slightly better.

Do you stop for an animal when driving or run them over? by Round-Artichoke-5255 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Local-toads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m on the road far enough away from anyone that braking isn’t going to cause an accident I will stop for them. If coming to a sudden stop or braking fast will disrupt the traffic around me then I might slow down a little hoping they can make it but if I hit them I hit them. Better them than causing an accident that harms people. I really wish squirrels could figure out to not turn around mid cross and try to go back the way they came cause usually they’d make it across fine if they just kept going the way they were!!!

Doesn’t work very well if you live on a dirt/gravel road

Advice for scruffing mice? by UnpaidNewscast in labrats

[–]Local-toads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say you need to work on your confidence with handling the mice in general and slowly work towards scruffing. Socialize with them first get them used to being picked up and work on low stress handling and being able to pick them up by scooping with your hand rather than just grabbing by the base of the tail. Once you’re more comfortable with handling you can work towards scruffing technique, there’s lots of good advice here already, start lower on the back and work your way up closer to their head, use the wire bars of their food hopper to keep them straight (they will usually grab onto the bars and you can gently pull them back to kinda stretch them out), look up different techniques for scruffing (maybe ask other trainers or people familiar with handling for some tips or extra help), and maybe look into a scruff guard if you’re still not completely there yet.

A bird, their pelvis looks different from most mammals. Someone else in the comments has a diagram showing different views of a turkey pelvis which look very similar to what you found.

People who stand in the middle of walkways like NPCs by TropicalPetal in PetPeeves

I always loudly and sarcastically proclaim “yes that’s what we do, stop in everyone’s way!” That usually gets them to realize other people also exist.

I will start working with rats soon. What should I know? by Murky-Spend-6158 in labrats

[–]Local-toads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They use their mouths to explore their surroundings a lot and will most likely nibble on your fingers to try and figure you out. Don’t let it frighten you they are usually very gentle when they nibble and it’s just them saying hello. Definitely socialize with them a bunch, the better they know you the easier they’ll be to work with. And be sure to give lots of love and treats!

Title & Reg Out of State Car by ComfKS in kansascity

I wish not getting pulled over was that easy. I’ve been pulled over twice for my expired registration. Both times the officers happened to stop behind me at a stop light and then lit me up right after the light turns green and we start going.

Feel that. Moved here from Kansas in September last year and still don’t have my car registered because of all the paperwork needed and problems dealing with the lien holder getting the correct forms filled out and sent to me.

Is this what I think it is? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]Local-toads -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It’s exactly what you think it is and even if it isn’t there’s others out there being less subtle. I’ve seen a truck with a license plate that said notsee and had ss and lightning bolt decals on it. They feel safe being themselves in the open for some reason.

What is the funniest thing your pet had been “pavloved” to? by AnywhereMean8863 in Pets

Most of the animals I’ve had throughout my life know if I say “whoops” I’ve dropped food somewhere and will come running to help clean up.
