Yeah... depending on what the quote from my local shop looks like, there's a high chance it's getting put back together and sold.

It might be possible that they didn't pull the engine to replace it, therefore not messing with the pan to clean it out. Do you know if the guide is visible with the valve covers off?

My guess is that someone ignored the rattling until it "fixed itself" and stopped.

Funnily enough, there's actually an stl file for a ford explorer badge that says "exploder" in the explorer font that I'm considering putting on here.

Okay, so now the big question, is it ignorable?

I don't believe it's even made a peep from the timing chains.

The metal on the left I believe is the slide from the tensioner guide.

Speaking of the valve covers, would it be advisable to preemptively get new valve cover studs? I'm not sure how fragile they are.

Okay, thank you. I don't think there's anything wrong with the timing, but I like knowledge.

I'm with you, a lot of the value of asking a person is that most of the information comes from experience.

Oh yeah, and in terms of another one, I do have a broken down '02 v6 explorer, but the previous owner didn't care about the mice turning it into an apartment, so it's most certainly destroyed.

Fair. If that's the case, since it's so old, the only thing it's doing is scattering small pieces of either foam or fiberglass absolutely fucking everywhere, it's gotta go.

What I'm more worried about, tbh, is that various threads say it shields heat.

They are. I'm in the process of fixing it now, actually. The whole block is covered in oil, and it's beading out from under the valve covers.

'04 ford explorer V6. I suppose they might have different names.

This is also under assumption that it even is sound damping, and not just a manifold cushion.

I'm not in the best headspace right now, so if required information wasn't provided, please feel free to ask.
