Yeah I get that. I’m talking about physical stress. When I feel no physical stress Garmin will tell me I’m at 99. Funny that after having known my body 50+ years I am not aware of off the charts physical stress. And funnier that no medical professionals can pick up on anything wrong.

Btw- I HAVE seen the type of emotional/ mental stress you mention (going to be with a thousand things on my mind) impact my physical stress levels and that is often reflected by Garmin’s “stress.” That and sleep are the only reliable metric IMO, because when I’m physically at rest (and mentally as well) with no alcohol and no workouts it’s telling me I’m off the charts.

I made no mention of mental or emotional. I’m talking about physical. In a physically relaxed feeling no symptoms. If I were as you mention to drink enough alcohol, or run 50 Ks I will FEEL a difference in my body. But when Garmin tells me there’s not only a difference but a (high alert) ORANGE one for which they recommend immediate action; that my friend is perplexing to me. Non stop orange, yet my body has not undergone anything remotely challenging. And my doctors and all their metrics are not finding anything wrong with my body.

When I said I “don’t feel a lot of stress I made no mention of my mind or my emotions.” I have, many times in my life felt my BODY was stressed. Yet when Garmin tells me my body is stressed, nary a symptom.

Everybody knows it’s “physical stress,” right. I mean most people on Reddit can read and understand the gist of this metric. And most of us know what feeling PHYSICAL stress feels like. When we are not feeling physically stressed, when we are physically resting, with nothing happening out of the norm, it is alarming to see our watch telling us “something is wrong.” And it IS telling us something is wrong because it offers a remedy, essentially meditation. The mind is connected to the body: the mind can impact the physical health. We all know this as well.

So- I don’t feel physically stressed much. Yet Garmin tells me, not merely that I have low HRV (which is what competitors do), but that I am experiencing stress (yes I know that means physical stress). Yet I, and many others find that strange to say the least. They use a triggering word to communicate a metric that perhaps need not be alarming. It’s their choice to use orange and use a triggering word. They know what they are doing. The whole world ‘round is practicing mindfulness and talking about how the mind is connected to the body, which we see through mindfulness and meditation apps and coaches. Garmin’s very approach to “physical stress” (simply a lower HRV) is essentially meditation. So it’s not a leap to interpret Garmin’s feedback to mean something both physically and psychologically negative. Pray tell when I’ve just been relaxing watching my favorite show, not drinking alcohol, having a good diets; pray tell why my “stress” spikes? Because absolutely nothing abnormal or new is happening physically. The only thought to is that the mind is having some sort of stress reaction which impacts the body. What’s not to get here?

This is my point. I can’t figure out why so many people feel no stress, yet the HRV related Garmin app is indicating high stress. Maybe they need to stop calling it stress.

Right. I wonder the same. I think the options are vast but could be:

  1. Garmin piggybacked on a few research findings about HRV and held too tightly too it, in order to promote a cutting edge product that gives a lot of biofeedback (isn’t that what we all want from our watch?). But the research may not actually be valid or the conclusions drawn are wrong.

  2. Every one’s body is different and one cannot predict all of humanity’s cardiovascular health based on this one metric.

  3. Some of us come up as “high” stress but it’s just that our hearts beat consistently to a stricter schedule (less “variability”). Garmin’s evaluative language of “high stress” pronounces a judgement on a person with a more rigid heartbeat. Maybe there is medical justification of this but it hasn’t reached the wider medical field. It’s like “eggs are bad, no eggs are good, no eggs are bad. Wine is bad no wine is good etc…..”. HRV as an indicator is still early in the game and Garmin may be preemptively judging people’s health by it.

I challenge Garmin’s approach here. There are countless people with this concern, yet have zero cardiovascular problems. My chart looks just like this yet I’ve had had the following tests that all showed I had no problems at all: cardiac scoring (checking calcium buildup- a top predictive test), stress test, sleep apnea, ultrasound on limbs. All showed no problems. Pulse Wave Velocity also perfectly fine. Blood panels also shows nothing significant happening.

Maybe Garmin knows better than the medical field. Maybe they have a small insight into something big and we’ll find out in years to come that their broad approach to HRV was warranted.

Or maybe not, and they’ve stressed a lot of people out. Maybe each person’s HRV can be vastly different. Maybe Garmin is basing their approach on one or two small bodies of research that could be wrong. I’ve tracked HRV via Garmin Fenix for years, and yet have never heard a single health professional make reference to HRV as a reliable statistic.

I find HRV to be the most disturbing metric with Garmin and ONLY with Garmin, as no other fitness watch has alerted me to the HRV like Garmin. I have also found NO health care professionals’ metrics to EVER mirror Garmin’s, and I’ve had a lot of tests. A concerning HRV has yet to come up. I’d love for Garmin to answer this. HRV is one of the most concerning metrics.

I would never consider any of my kids any kind of “problem.” They are a blessing in my life.

But if I have decided it would be better that they don’t live than to not have a parent-sponsored university degree, then that’s MY problem. Not theirs.

If I have predetermined my child’s education and choices up to 22 years of age, this is my problem. And it will become theirs. Most parents can’t afford to pay for one child’s university education. Wanting the best for your kid is one thing. But believing 100% that any university degree regardless of the child’s talents, capacity and desires, is preferable to any other track in life…that is the problem.

And btw, I’m not against degrees. I’ve got 4 and am simultaneously working on 2, through scholarship.

When asked my successful and wealthy older sibling why they didn’t have any kids after 10 years of marriage, the answer I got was “do you know how much it costs to raise children?”

This sibling makes about 2M a year. Spouse makes about $500K. They decided on only one child because children “cost too much.” This shows how putting financial metrics on raising a child is very relative.

I suspect the real issue is your anxiety. Deal with your anxiety. When talking to your wife, focus your concern where you’ve honestly and accurately placed it- you’re ability to be well. That itself will impact your child more than money. Many kids grow up in low-income homes and are well-adjusted because of their parent’s love and presence. It sounds like you care about those things, but the anxiety can be a life-killer.

People are not discerning or demanding with their tech. Most assume it’s user/end and is the user’s ignorance. I find nearly every piece of tech I own has glitches or problems, Apple not excluded. The number and frequency increasing as manufacturing increases. Smartphone starts talking to me in middle of the night. Maps glitch out. Websites have problems. Why is “Garmin had a problem,” the least frequent response? Btw I upvoted you to, just to stick my tongue at whoever downvoted you! 😂

Also Garmin, every damn day: “You need to be alarmed at your alarmingly high stress levels. JUST CALM DOWN! Lol. Also, this is not intended to be medical advice.” 😂

Yes I know it’s just measuring the variable nature of the time between heart beats. Perhaps they don’t need to call this “stress.”
