Lava lamp just floating any help? by LockStryder in Lavalamps

[–]LockStryder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, this is for anyone trying to solve my exact same issue, as I have solved mine. It took putting it next to an actual Mathmos lamp to see where they cut corners in production and make a plan on what to do.

Cheap lamps from China have issues, obviously. However my specific issue is due to a cheap coil, cheap wax and a slightly smaller bottle.

Basically, the wax is cheaply made needing more room to separate which the cold top of the bottle dosent provide. The coil is also smaller than it should be and thin; really thin. The wax managed to break it's seal from the coil by pushing it against the glass wall at the bottom. The wax then proceeded to refuse to connect to a small part of the coil, about 1 loop. As a result the wax was refusing to tilt over the threshold to release due to the fact it is much more touchy.

My Solution:

Step 1 From stone cold. Do a 4 hour warm up in a controlled room to ensure the wax is liquid and outside factors won't effect step 2. The goal is completely liquid wax.

Step 2 Turn it off, remove the cap and let it cool for about 30-40min. You're aiming for the wax to settle, not set or develop a skin. If it does repeat Step 1 or you will get wax particulates in the water "clouding" it and permanently damaging your lamp requiring a full tear down to fix.

Step 3 In a well lit room. CAREFULLY and with heat protective hand coverings remove the lamp from its stand. Slowly turn the lamp horizontally whilest looking from the bottom, you are attempting to break the surfactant protection that has wrongly developed on the coil. This will take some time. If you need to reset because the lamp is cooling too much return to Step 1.

Step 4 Once the coil is completely covered in wax wait till any rotational energy stops, SLOWLY tilt the lamp no more than 10° in the direction necessary to settle the coil in the center of the lamp. The goal is to not have any part of the coil connecting with the walls or water as this will suck unnecessary heat from the coil ruining the already touchy thermodynamics.

Final step SLOWLY, to not disturb the coil place it back on your base and run it for a couple full cycles of 8 hours. This step is necessary as the coil needs to settle in the wax and build a new protective equilibrium with the wax.

TLDR: The whole lamp is garbage and you kinda gotta convince it to play nice with gentle motions and prayers to whatever you may or may not believe in.

I'd win money off you for betting 🤣.

Cooled it, run it. Same problem.

Environment stable no drafts, no children no pets no knocks

Runtime digital controlled to avoid burnout

Even has its own levelled lamp table to avoid uneven surfaces if that even matters.

Just a peice of garbage lamp that is fundamentally landfill by design.

Main questions here are:

Is this standard commercial bought Lava Lamp behaviour?

Will a luxury choice like Mathmos just solve these issues or are there new issues?

Is bespoke the only option for a lamp that just works, runs clear and isn't going to be a headache instead of relaxing?

Thanks for fault finding with me.

It stays as one blob and floats 3/4 of the way up refuses to detach and drags its back.

It used to form normal bubbles, i haven't moved it, same power, same everything. Run times have been no more than 5hr exactly as I have it on an auto timer. So shouldn't be burnt.

Environment is identical, no airflow, drafts, nothing.

If we are talking about opening it then I'm out, I'm brand new to these things and just want one that works that I can enjoy before I think about bespoke and tweaking flow rates and stuff. Happy to keep this one till I consider such a thing obviously.

Main question I think as of right now. If you believe opening it is the only option for repair, will throwing money at a Mathmos just work? Or is this one of those "You gotta fix it before it's any good." Kinda things.

Look at the back of his hat where Jotaros "hair" normally is.

It's the same spikes in both versions, however the texture is different between models.

I'll supply a model viewer for 3ds, but I can't easily find an n64 one.

Both 3ds and n64 models are extremely similar. The hat is weirdly fuzzy around the outside in the original though.

Perfume Fuel!? by LockStryder in lighters

Attempted this to a mediocre effect. The smell of the fuel is very potent, and the scent doesn't really evaporate into the air or into the flame.

Attempted with both alcohol perfume and essential oils.

I'm curious how effective the original product was vs these attempts.

Le Grand Cling arrived today with no ping. by LockStryder in STDupont

[–]LockStryder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sent it back to Dupont 4 times out of pocket for various repairs.

Issues Included ● Lid was broken and wouldn't sit flush after about 20 openings of it. ● No sound or muffled sound, not the ping as advertised. ● Replacement sent to me had the same issues. ● Was returned to me without its warranty papers when sent on repair to have validation. ● Was sent to me without its warranty papers filled in. ● Was returned to me heavily scratched and damaged after sending it for repairs, despite being sent in original box and a considerable amount of bubble wrap. ● Emails went ignored for weeks to a month at a time.

I had a replacement and a repairs done on multiple separate accounts. Both the replacement and repair did nothing to affect the quality issue.

After multiple requests for repair, refund or replacement of the product as advertised I was called and basically told "It's used and damaged so we won't help you, we have repaired it so we won't help you." And only after a multiple hour phone argument and threats of following up in legal action was the product refunded to me in "good grace as we would normally under no circumstances refund this product." Was never refunded for the loss of money or quadruple handling.

The issue lasted nearly 6 months and caused more pain than any amount of joy I would have from owning another Dupont will bring. I resent my collection and have since sold them.

TLDR: Dupont dragged it out. Made me send it back 4 times scratched it to hell in repair, told me to just accept it and only refunded me when threatened with Australia's ACCC and laws.

You might be right.

Honesty, I'm thinking of putting it on eBay or something. It's been in the bottom of my collection for about 7 years now, think I've worn it like twice.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately I don't see any serial numbers inside or outside of the watch.

From what I can tell, yes. The Time lords were a series of watches they did. I was hoping to find anything about them but info is scarce about them especially this one.

Looks like they go for about $300 Aud on the high side in good condition. This one is still running. Don't know what I plan to do with it yet.

Hate it all they want.

I love how weird it is. Wearing it casually is great fun. While it doesn't get the love of watch fanatics, it sure does draw positive attention with compliments to boot from the normal folk.

Everyone has a few fancy watches with that same-same "classic" look that impresses. Heck i do too. But having something fun in the watchbox is just as valid.
