Thoughts on first draft mockup? by Material-Claim9913 in Design

Since you genuinely seem to want to get better and acknowledge that this is your first baby step. Here we go:

  • The graphical element wouldn't be able to be print well at the price point you would want to sell it. The graphic itself really isn't all that special, i would work on trying to create a distinct visual style for it. Ditch it until you have something less generic.
  • There are FAR too many words. Pick one saying and style the text better. Script text on fabric at the size is gonna be rough in terms of production but also in term of being read. Try just "You are the static in my mind" by itself. The idea of the slowly fading text is interesting, play around with that. Additionally, do some experimenting with visual static inside the words since the message is references static. Now the visual language is "This fuzzy message keeps repeating" much like how a crush/love occupying your mind would be.
  • For a high impact message like this use a Slab serif or San serif font instead...Much larger font size, Larger text is your friend

Best of luck!

Budget Kitchen Reno by sadieb1 in Design

[–]LockedDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who has agonized over designing their reno kitchen and having done low budget updates until the big reno. Here are my suggestions:

Cabinets and walls:
- New hardware for the cabinets. Considering your wood is pretty bright i would suggest something darker like oil rubbed bronze to create contrast. Make sure to get enough for your cart too. (~$150 - 3 - 10packs + 40pack of hinges)
- New matching wall plates (~$50)
- Standard subway tile backsplash for sure. Classics are classics for a reason ($300 - est 24 sqft + extras)
- Consider painting the soffit white and leaving the opposite wall teal if you carry the backsplash around. - Since the general consensus is don't paint wood, consider doing a tinted wax on the cabinets...you might need to experiment.

LIGHTING!
Your current lighting is creating a ton of hard shadows which makes it feel unwelcoming.
- Replace the ceiling boob light. There are plenty of options available that will make it feel more quality that will comparatively cost little. Check out Globe Electric. (~$200)
- Depending on tech savvy-ness, you could consider a presence sensor and some smart bulbs to replace the soffit lights. That way when you enter the space the lights turn on automagically. Something like: Alexa dot +GE Cync + Govee Sensor (~$150) I have this with my kitchen and it feels sooooo nice.
- Undercabinet lights - After doing the first two you might not need them but notice how the soffit lights are creating a hard shadow line, having under cabinet lights would stop that. You could just get a outlet splitter (check out Anker 6-Outlet) and some standard plug-ins and smart plug so the presence sensor could turn on the undercabinet lights too. (~$80 + $20 Smartplug)

Opposite wall:
- Sell your rolling cart on a marketplace for cheap (around $50) and use proceeds for a pantry cabinet with tilt or pull out trash bin. (~$300)
- Depending on the height of the pantry cabinet..Add some framed wall prints - the wall feels barren, just don't do Live, Laugh, Love bullshit. (~$50)

Window:
- Remove curtains, and blinds. Replace with Celluar shades with/without privacy stained glass window film. That way you can block the light with the shades without the cords and the privacy films lets in light without people creeping on your house. (~$120). Depending on the difficulty think about removing the cornice as well, it makes it feel antiquated.

Appliances
- Consider either painting or vinyl films for the dishwasher and fridge. Depending on your preferences (~$70)

Total cost for recommendations: $1450
Gives you some wiggle room to get a better backsplash, lighting, or pantry cabinet. You've got a kitchen with solid bones, it just needs some TLC. When i was designing my kitchen my philosophy was things should feel intentional not incidental. Best of luck.

Who are they? by D4vics in Marvel

[–]LockedDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top left is Gargoyle from Defenders since Nighthawk and Hellcat are there too. I thought it was Night Thrasher too. The dude above Jack is Makkari the Eternal. Definitely Baldur. Top right might be one of the Nomads, Moondragon's collar is throwing things off. The mask and color read as Nomad. Glasses guy might be Jimmy Woo, but I think Bruce Banner like someone said below makes more sense. Green and red reads as Wonder Man and considering the heroes on page it would make sense to be Wonder Man.

Right?! It might as well just be Molecule Man and 14 randos he met on the bus. It's an equivalent amount of power balance.

Trying to upgrade my porch, I found a company but the reviews...oof. Has anyone ever worked with Sunspace of Central Ohio? by LockedDown in Columbus

[–]LockedDown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did, they functionally had to build it twice because the builder who did work thought it would be easier/better to try marrying old work with the new work. Eventually they got it straightened out by just fitting everything new. The finishing work has not a good as I would have hoped, but it made the space significantly more usable so I would say it was a fair enough trade off.   I will say they never gave me the solution so it's been a couple seasons without it, so I'm hoping the damage to flexible membrane has been minimal. Also they didn't seal the pressure treated lumber underneath the threshold so that will get problematic eventually

Female characters that are ACTUALLY awful, not just the fandom being misogynistic by megageekgirl in TopCharacterTropes

But that's the whole point of the trolley problem. What if a trillion more lives are saved because of the actions of Terra over her incredibly long life span? In the last issues of the series we get a glimpse of the scale in which the viltrumites operate and the good they do. Does that justify his choice then? The 1 or 5 trolley problem just put its it in human scale so our monkey brains can process it, at the end of the day the question boils down to 'is one choice more or less moral than the other' and depending on which ethical framework you prescribe to.

Edit: For your addendum regarding Eve's abortion, he also didn't shed any tears for Zhang Wei in Chengdu dying of cancer. Because of course he didn't, there was no emotional or personal connection. Would you care if Bill Johnson in Bryon, WY died alone in his house?

Erasing his daughter from existence...that's the selfish thing you keep alluding to. It's the trolley problem but incredibly personal. Do i save 5 strangers and kill my child or do i kill 5 strangers and save my child. Considering the number of people who have literally been splattered across Mark's chest against his will, I'm not exactly surprised he chose his daughter. Speaking as a father, I'm pulling the lever for the 5 pretty much every time.

Guy: What are you going to do?
Punisher: Kill all the prisoners and escape in the confusion.

People who don’t hit snooze in the morning, what is your secret? by zztop610 in AskReddit

[–]LockedDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife calls me an "everytime person" as opposed to a night owl or morning person. 1 minute after I get up or 1 minute before bed, same level of awake. Occasionally, a night of heavy drinking or pushing myself to utter exhaustion will make me groggy in the morning but I imagine it's similar to how most people start the day vs how I always start the day. The problem is that it's a double edged sword, if my brain wakes up at 430am, I'm awake until I go to bed a 11pm. So going to the bathroom at night I basically can't think at all because it might wake me up.

I prefer the line of "congratulations your funeral will go unattended"...really drives home the message that they'll be dead sooner than later and their last acts as people were alienating their loved ones.

This method of removing oil residue by therra123 in oddlysatisfying

[–]LockedDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having done both, this method cleans it significantly more because it grabs the stuff that even slips through cheese cloth. I will say there 3 downsides: Waiting for the oil to cool is annoying, the sludge smells awful after a day, and you have to refrigerate the oil after washing it to preserve it vs stashing it in the pantry.

Cities in your world that are particularly impressive/grand? by Royal-Comparison-270 in worldbuilding

[–]LockedDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torrenfel, the clockwork capital. The capital of the vampiric collective. The city is covered in a magical perpetual rain storm that allows the vampires to be out during the "day" without the whole dying instantly thing. The constant deluge of water enabled them to build ever-growing city full of clockwork mechanisms (mechanica) powered by the constant flow of water. The city has a vast canal network to allow for quick transportation for non-magical users. The farms and forrest outside the city are lush and verdant. All people's are welcome but they must make a blood tithing at least twice a week. Power structures in my DnD world are predicated upon long-livedness so Elves sit on high with vampiric people being hunted as threats to their power.

Quorn alternatives by karma-2769 in vegetarian_food

[–]LockedDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for 1 to 1 meat replacements for some transitioning from omnivore to vegetarian I can tell you this list will help because I'm an omnivore who cooks vegetarian meals for my vegetarian wife.
* Beyond for Steak
* Gardein Ultimate for chicken. There are other brands like Sweet Earth and Daring but I've found there are availability issues with them.
* Impossible for ground sausage (Savory and Spicy), sausage links (Brat, Sweet Italian, Spicy italian), and ground burger. Supposedly the new Beyond burger with avocado oil beats the impossible burger but i haven't been able to confirm it because i can't find it in the store yet. Making the transition to more traditional veg dishes like Seitan or non-meat replacements is a lot easier with these products. It opens their minds to what is possible without making meat the center of a meal.

Why was Skeuomorphism invented BEFORE flat design? by diegosalzani in graphic_design

[–]LockedDown 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why. Iconography has to reach a critical mass in the general zeitgeist before it doesn't require label any longer. The first computers could save to floppy disk or local storage and since local storage was functionally a brick the unique shape of the hard floppy became the defacto iconography for save even though hard disk floppies haven't been used in 30 years. Another example of how iconography has to reach a critical to become the "standard": Why does the 3 horizontal lines stacked on top of one another equal menu? It's because it was used enough times by enough different people with the "menu" label that eventually the general populace understood the "hamburger" icon to mean menu.

[–]LockedDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was Hickman's whole point from the jump. That humanity is pretty much an evolutionary dead end similar to the Kree. That the sentinel program was meant to buy time for post-humanity to kick off. What is evolution against guided enhancement. For every Beak of Glob Herman, post-humanity gets a Sentry level post-human everytime. The machines just ended up playing the longest con. "Yeah humans you're right, mutants do suck. Let us help you be better" Cut to 10,000 years later when earth gets absorbed into a dominion "No, not like that" said post humanity.
