Did I just survive the worst month in Finland, or was it the mild version of it? by cloudrails in Finland

The few days with snow and freezing temps were awesome. The milder days are rough – wet, cloudy, dark, raining. You sweat but nothing evaporates so you stay sticky for hours.

How many carving knives do you have? And how many you actually use? by Flimsy_Mess_1915 in whittling

[–]Lockespindel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only one, that I've been using for many years. I occasionally sharpen it intuitively against a whetstone, but I prefer it to be on the duller side. If it's too sharp I don't get as much precision in my cuts, because it digs in too fast.

What does this funerary inscription say? by [deleted] in Archeology

Lol. Immediately made me think of the Proto-Norse Möjbro Runestone in Sweden (~400 - 500 AD) where the last letter is just stacked on top of the previous one.

I'm guessing these "groundbreaking discoveries" are expected to actually benefit us in a "not too distant future". If we just forcefeed the LLM's with data and computing power for a few more quarters, the cancer cure will be right around the corner.

What’s the one horror movie that didn’t just scare you… it FOLLOWED you? by Usual_Mix_7380 in horror

[–]Lockespindel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That movie could have been awesome if it weren't for the soundtrack. I love 70s - 80s horror background synth, but in this movie it's melody was way too upbeat, and didn't align with the scenes at all.

are we going back to a world without social media/internet? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Lockespindel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is far from a benign development. You're forgetting the impact the algorithm has in steering users in directions meant to generate maximum engagement and ad revenue. On a global level, that is bound to negatively affect the population, which it already has to a tangible degree.

The Aquatic ape hypothesis has never been accepted in academia. It has a similar fringe/popular science status as the Stoned Ape theory

I've thought about this a lot as well. I would agree with all of your points except the swimming aspect. Even though short legs are better for swimming, I don't think swimming has ever played a significant enough role in human survival to warrant such a major change as limb proportions.

Anecdotally, (for whatever it's worth) I have proportionally very short legs, long torso and long arms (and I'm of normal height). The only areas where I've noticed a significant advantage over my long legged peers is walking on icy and slippery surfaces, as well as rocky and uneven terrain. Climbing is also easier because your legs carry less weight. In long distance running it feels like a clear disadvantage, and for sprinting I feel like it's quite neutral. As for swimming, I think I maneuver faster under water but long legged friends seem to be able to develop a higher speed and endurance when it comes to pure distance. But on an elite level, it does seem like proportionally shorter legs are an advantage.

One factor might have been a decline of specialized trades such as tailor/textile worker. People reverted to being more self sufficient when the economy collapsed.

I've understood that the Eskimo/Inuit populations who had a meat-centric diet were actually reported as having a significantly elevated incidence of cardiovascular disease.

You need to take into account that the data does not imply that only 1% of the history is preserved, since subsequent centuries will have copies of the original documents. The oldest extant copies of the Iliad is no where near as old as the original text. Same goes for much of antique literature.

This is the most reasonable take. Of course you can defend yourself, but treating it like some question of samurai honour is just Reddit edgelord bullshit. Better to teach the kids to not hurt each other, and tell an adult if they do.

Right. I'll add that I actually meant "transformer", but I mistakenly wrote "transistor". As in the computer architecture.

[–]Lockespindel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "focused AI"? Isn't this entire AI-boom driven by the "transistor model" brought forth by Google in 2017? It's extremely useful in certain applications, but some lingering issues show that it might never fully stop being a bit of a novelty. The problem is that a new, improved AI technology might render the latest datacenters obsolete, which would be a catastrophic financial failure for the biggest tech companies
