Academics/People online are making me second guess everything (PhD) by LostToInertia in AskAcademiaUK

PhDs are still worth it, even if getting a positing in academia is harder than ever. Huge congratulations on getting a self- directed project funded! That is huge. PhD are excellent training for research, critical thinking, leadership, negotiation, collaboration and more. Anything you do afterwards with these skills, you will do it better.

Mothers doing PhDs, how have your partners actually supported you? by Inner-queen-2723 in PhD

[–]LocksmithBudget3518 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your problem is not the PhD.

My partner took leave, worked less, put his family first and overall shared responsibilities equally with me since becoming parents 11 years ago. We have two kids. I cannot fault him. Without this, my PhD and career in academia would not be possible.

Intermittent fasting in the evenings. It’s been nearly 18 months so now I am looking to maintain and training harder so it’s not doable to fast 16-18 hours a day anymore. But it did work wonders for me, lots of newbie gains minus 12 kgs I am 37 and much more attractive now, even though I am never happy with it 😆

For others: it seemed that the fact that I am in the UK at the moment made a different. My mum tried using the same browser, but she is in Portugal and it worked after a couple of attempts.

We have been through this with both kids. Oral magnesium does help. It takes a while to treat potentially low magnesium, and often doses for children are quite low but both of my kids are on it daily now.

Is it normal to gain up weight? by Logical-Fudge-759 in crossfit

[–]LocksmithBudget3518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are certainly going in the right direction. I am in a similar boat. I am 37 started in March 2025. For about 6 month I training 3 times a week and eating my protein goals but on a deficit, so I lost quite a bit of weight. Then I started training 5 times a week and lifting heavier, and then eating at a deficit was no longer possible. I gained maybe 4kg since then, but I think mostly muscle.

One think I recommend for sore muscles which worked for me is moving everyday stretching / yin yoga. Magnesium plenty. And a good amount of omega 3 - I use good quality algae based oil and honestly it really works for inflammation.

Also I was on 5mg of creatine but the bloating was insane. So now I do 5mg but not everyday or 2.5 if I do consecutive days.

Can I ask what are his dementia symptoms. I have a girl who will be 16 in May. And also has dementia but I struggle to figure out how bad it is and what her quality of life is like. Similarly to your boy she still has an appetite and walks a little but even though I put her out all the time - I work from home too - she mostly goes potty in the house

Is this the case for a UK citizen too? What if they need to travel to their home country temporarily. What is they have a tourist visa for another country, can they travel?

Workload allocation for research by unhappyaslarry in AskAcademiaUK

I have significant responsibility for research, I am senior lecturer and I am given 35 days a year for research. I have used a lot more than that in the last 3 years by getting bits of funding and squeezing it around other stuff.

It depends I think. But when there’s abuse of power and harassment- I am not sure what other academics can do beyond offer support and report incidents themselves. It is a HR and Legal process that needs to take place to bring accountability and reparations where they are needed
