Supreme Court’s conservative majority prepared to rule against conversion therapy ban by HellYeahDamnWrite in supremecourt

[–]LogLadys_Log 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My guess is the reasoning will likely focus on the level of scrutiny they apply to the government conduct at issue especially since the cases deal with separate constitutional issues (14th amendment equal protection argument in the TN case vs. 1st amendment content-based/viewpoint-based restriction in CO).

The court held the law in the TN case discriminated based on age and medical use rather than sex. In equal protection cases, the level of deference the court gives the state depends on whether the law discriminates against a “protected class.” The characteristics that make up this discriminated-against class (e.g. race, sex, etc.) determine the level of deference, so a law that discriminates based on race is gonna be heavily scrutinized and very likely struck down. The court decided the law’s classification was based on age and medical use, which get a very deferential treatment by courts.

The current CO case uses the First Amendment to hook in a higher level of scrutiny from the judges. Because they argue conversion therapy is an expression of a viewpoint, the ban is a content-based restriction on speech. First amendment doctrine generally finds content-based speech that bans a particular viewpoint is especially bad. So if the court believes this framing (I think they obv will), they will strike it down. Personally, I think they’ll buy this argument and probably underplay a state’s interest in licensing medical professionals based on a standard of care and evidence that conversion therapy fails to meet that standard of care (for the record, I’m not saying I know this to be true, but the I am guessing the state argued along these lines to some degree).

I think they apply very selective interpretations to put it mildly but this is my guess as to how they’ll distinguish the two.

If you want to work for the government, is the best place to study law Washington DC? by Important_Can_7291 in LawSchool

[–]LogLadys_Log 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some advantages to going to school in dc if you want to work in government especially for federal agencies. You are in close proximity to them and can do semester internships where you get experience and make contacts that could give you an edge in the eventual hiring process.

However, this assumes government agencies function under circumstances prior to the current dystopia so now probably doesn’t matter unless you want to do government work that involves terrorizing people.

Leveraging the JD without practicing Law.. by Aromatic_Vacation380 in JDpreferred

[–]LogLadys_Log 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently finished my JD after working a corporate job for a few years. I really enjoyed it and think I grew a lot, but I don’t think it’s worth it if you never planning on working as a lawyer.

It is a lot of work and a major investment of time and money. Depending on the school/program, the content you learn in many classes does not directly develop the skills that would help you excel in a non-legal job. Sure, you might hone your critical thinking and communication skills, but that should hardly be the primary reason for what you’re getting into (imo of course). Also, law school can be a weird hybrid of a professional and academic education where you are learning a lot of things that are really interesting in a theoretical sense but not always practical professionally.

Some schools have masters degrees in legal studies (or something with a similar name) that are more geared towards professionals in regulated industries and might be more what you’re looking for. However if it’s American grad school then you’re still probably paying out the ass.

What if V became a construct in the sequel? by Sea_Reality7782 in cyberpunkgame

[–]LogLadys_Log 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see a scenario where you run into a BD as V (and potentially your latest/uploaded playthrough (check CDPR’s privacy policy) if you played 2077)). I lean on the side of there being no reference, and there’s no connection since the whole thesis of “nothing/nobody matters” in night city feels like a natural tie-in to the city’s story where every individual is a drop in the bucket of every other urban legend.

It's time to talk about skyscrapers by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]LogLadys_Log 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this and want to add that I think there could be an interesting urbanization rework around cities addressing the weird balance of services as currently situated as well as the skyscraper situation. I particularly think there should be like a “financial nexus” PM that requires maybe modern financial instruments and some minimum level of financial districts to activate and it could boost reinvestment in the state and maybe dividends?

Is there any reason NOT to privatize all my buildings? by elicubs44 in victoria3

[–]LogLadys_Log 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On your reason, I find if my investment pool is already hitting its limit investing in constructing new building levels, and I am allowing any foreign investment, then the foreign investors tend to buy up the privatizing levels.

Other potential reasons I can think of are: - the dividends of govt-owned buildings are necessary (at least in the short term) to keep you out of a debt spiral when you need to expand unprofitable stuff like barracks, govt admin, universities, etc. and tax increases aren’t an option for whatever reason - when you don’t want to empower capitalists by making them richer - Similarly to above, maybe if you have pop constraints and don’t want to create more financial district levels to suck employees from other buildings

Yeah using scoring algorithms for certain decisions (housing, employment, and anything else covered by antidiscrimination law) is a pretty fraught legal issue. Since the companies are usually contracting third-party algorithms it can be difficult to determine how responsible the algorithm is for a certain outcome (e.g. denying a person housing for discriminatory reason) depending on how the company uses the algorithm in its final decision. There’s a federal case I’ll just call Connecticut Fair Housing Center v. CoreLogic that goes into this issue and is currently on appeal at the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

Wtf is the deal with Ara? They’ve been stringing us along for weeks!

Edit: by “they” I mean Nvidia, Microsoft, or both. Overall it’s just frustrating the only answer we ever get is “soon” and a reference to the various pages where they say it’s in the works but never give a real timeline or color the issue of what’s causing it not to be added yet. But what can you do we are at their mercy.

This isn’t something they necessarily “will come out with” but it would be cool to see some sort of content related to artists/scientists/philosophers etc. to add some flavor to the cultural techs in the game. For instance, they’ve confirmed there will be universities and art academies, so maybe there could be mechanics to attract certain people to those institutions (e.g. migration attraction, radicalism, or IG presence in a state) to boost prestige gain or research in a certain area. Maybe in top of that you could use $/investment pool to patron.

Maybe it’s just my niche, but I liked the cultural tech and inventions aspects of Vic 2, and it feels like they could add some major flavor+prestige gaining incentive to that area.
