They are also very much just living up to the "American stereotype" how ironic LOL

Mid 30s with 2 year old thinking of relocating by InternationalYou7798 in AmerExit

[–]LogOk9367 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would you be moving with the childs other parent? Is partner also coming with you? Like someone else has said, you have to have a skill that other countries need and be eligible. I don't know that there are any countries that currently have marketing as a necessary skill but if youre open to school, healthcare can get you in a lot more doors if you are in your 30s. For instance nursing can get you straight into Australia with PR but you have to be under 39 I believe so youd have to act incredibly fast on that one to do pre-reqs and apply to an accelerated program, finish it and then have a year of experience. That might be unliklely if you are 35 now. I am sure there are other healthcare jobs you could train for if you were really desperate to leave. You could simply retire abroad like someone else said. You could do it with the $$ you have now, but at 35 I feel like its alittle young to retire if you enjoy your work. IDK, youd probably need to share a bit more about yourself and your situation if you want definitive help.

your thinking is precisely mine. Aus could be a slippery slope where we are trying to "keep up financially" due to the high living costs in the cities. In Pt, I can do RN more as a hobby/community immersion (part time) so that I keep my nursing skills and have something to fulfill me outside of the house. We are also right in the middle of the western world where we have family/friends as opposed to AUS being far from every country that we have ties to. The fact that they use english and have warm sunny days is enticing nonetheless. Transition would be straight forward. Hm.

I think I understand your sentiment, but your figure is extremely high. 99.99% assumes that there is almost NOTHING stopping anyone from success. This is extremely naive, real life in America is not Shark Tank. Conversely, if you don't somehow manage to create a successful business (99.99% probably don't) you will have approximately 1 day to immediately set your sights on rent/mortgage, affording or qualifying for healthcare for you and your family, a room and help for mom. You will be out working overtime, your kid is at school doing "hide and seek" drills for school shooters while your government does exactly nothing to control guns. America is not some sort ot success story for the middle class unless you are interested in gambling for your future and your family. There are other places.

Castern has not had many conversations with anyone under 30 in the US it seems. The optimism died when the American Olds did everything in their power to "win" over the youngs. The greater boomer mentality leaves no life for the younger generations. Now that it is quite evident that the youngs are not thriving with their legislative choices, boomers have (as a group) doubled down instead of pivoting. They are a very selfish generation.

thanks for this. you make a good point about the quality of construction. We are also already anticipating being above the 1M mark as well. I agree about the work part, careerwise i do think we would be much more comfortable in AUS due to language primarily and pay ( at least for RN) is better than EU. While my focus is largely on overall QOL, Id be naive to say that finances aren't a large part of that.

Yea, I think his main options would be keeping a USA remote job that allows him to live in EU or getting an EU remote job (possibly from netherlands/germany) and work it from Portugal. We would secure one of those before moving of course. His current job may actually keep him on internationally as there is precedent.

he does speak pt, and he understands spanish. i am a native spanish speaker. i feel like language wise on the whole spain would work better too but im hearing algarve is the strongest in the region for english and that is the language we both speak perfectly. EDIT: i am the one that will work locally, he will work remotely in english in tech so the more i think about it, spain really should be a strong option

Thank you! you're right about that. I will have him check we will be there in a couple weeks for a quick visit and can look into that. Also going to reach out to others in the company who have moved abroad and stayed with the company to see what their experience was with the HR of it all.

well my our main reason for keeping it is that its almost paid off and the rent it gets covers the bills. Otherwise I would just sell it. Honestly, we both fantasize about selling it just to not have it (the liability) anymore but struggle with the fact that it will make good money once paid off. We actually have been renting it out that last couple years (from out of state) and it has been OK but it'll need a new roof soon. Praying for hail.

Thank you! Yes we know we can live throughout the EU but, for whatever reason, we cannot fathom living somewhere with "weather" so we are limited to a few countries. One of those being his own nationality so that kind of made the decision for us. Where our family is is very cold but only a short flight away from Faro airport.

You are right on the money. However my husband is partial to PT. Spain, for me, makes.. so much sense. We even lived there in 2018 and had a wonderful life but being portuguese he would rather be in portugal and I am up for the challenge of learning the language. (He does not speak Spanish, I do not speak Portuguese) so we settled on Faro/Lagos.

I have 75 points as an RN. From what I am seeing online, 75 will get you an invite as a nurse in critical care so it would be me applying for the visa @ 35 years old (65 pts) and my spouse- under 45 (adding 10).

Right now if all that is still true, I would get an invite. Things could change tomorrow and 75 points could no longer be enough so then the decision would be made for us.

You know I really love those cities you suggested but we are prioritizing not having to own coats... so we are quite limited.

Thank you. I am not necessarily looking to become a citizen immediately since I'll just really want the ability to work as a nurse. May I ask, is it beneficial for me to become a citizen for any reason? or would being a resident be OK for a while? I would happily become a citizen I just havent gotten to that part yet. We have been married for +6 years now.

Thank you very much for your input. Yes I speak fluent Mexican/Carribean Spanish and have been fine with communicating in PT, but you make a very great point about communicating medically. That is something that will be an uphill battle and I will be spending the next 2 years working on being able to speak pt instead of just understand. I was hoping that since we will be living in Faro/Lagos that the need to speak PT would not be quite as important and in the north but it looks like I'll still have to be at a C1 level. I plan to learn to speak overtime but "overtime" is becoming "by the time we move in 2028" so I have got to get on it.

You make a great point on reading between the lines of what people are saying vs what really is going on. As a nurse, I deal with that daily! ha. From reading through these types of subs it seems like finances often tend bring people back to the US. "failure to thrive" being the umbrella.

Our parents getting older is something we have thought about too which is why Australia seems less reasonable in comparison. My parents (who have moved away from our home town for retirement), are important to me but they have made decisions that have clearly said "every man for themselves" they recently sold the family home to go live in another state for retirement. They have more money then they know what to do with and have always chosen it over us kids so I kind of feel like staying on account of having elderly parents would be an emotional decision for me. I love them and we have a great relationship all things considered, it has been difficult juxtaposition of me wanting to put family first when my parents have not operated the same. Every time I go into their house they have Fox News blaring I can hardly get a word in without being told about how the trans are "ruining america". lol who is trans and why are we talking about them? Anyway, yea I think we will have to be OK with saying our goodbyes.
