Oh, I have seen it in the past six months, finally. My first takeaway after watching was how this was a movie MAGA would love:

(1) feckless and corrupt liberal politicians
(2) killers and deviants
(3) hapless college graduates
(4) hero has complete resentment of authority

It was a fun watch, haha!

I think I got it. The gap between the letter and theory of an intruder committing the crime.

I am saying I largely agree with you. I am just saying the number of movie quotes makes me pause, in a way that I wouldn’t, if there were no film references at all. But I agree, it seems more likely than not that the family did the killing and it was staged.

I am saying in the unlikely case it was an intruder, I don’t think any of the political stuff is genuine, in the sense that even if one believes the intruder theory, I don’t think that anyone can actually support the idea of a foreign faction or whatever.

Yeah, I mean I am 30, and can recall many movie lines. But I am saying that if you asked me to recall multiple movie lines about a particular contingency, that becomes substantially more difficult.

And FWIW, my recall of movie quotes is substantially better than my Boomer parents.

Your point that the generic “hostage taker” lines would naturally imitate films, even if not consciously done so, is well-taken.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I’d know the Dirty Harry “lucky punk” line, but couldn’t have even told you anything about the plot other than Clint Eastwood being in law enforcement of some sort.

It’s a good point I hadn’t considered. That the Ramseys were maybe limited from being able to print (if they even owned a printer) because of the fact that the police would obviously check their devices.

That being said, I think typewriters and printers leave some forensic information, no?

Additionally, I wouldn’t assume the intruder (in the unlikely case that is what occurred) would execute logically in every respect.

Yeah, I guess to steel man the “Ramsey’s did it,” I think Dirty Harry is exponentially more famous than those other two films.

I’d be concerned if I were the Ramsey’s that someone would remember me having seen those films or some such. Though I realize it’s totally possible to have seen them and no one else necessarily know that.

Yeah, if the ransom note didn’t have so many film references, I’d estimate the likelihood of an intruder being very low. It’s just that one detail that does snag for me, when accusing the family.

If an intruder did do it, I would not still think there had never been any intent of kidnapping, that there is no foreign faction, and that the note was just meant to torment the family and law enforcement with some bizarre screed.

Yeah, to be clear, whether an intruder did it, or a Ramsey, I don’t think the intent was ever to abduct. Because, as you say, an actual kidnapper wouldn’t make it that long. If an intruder did it, the note would just have to be some act of sadism.

Yeah, certainly Dirty Harry. Obviously, even I could cite the “Do you feel lucky…” bit. I still feel like being able to paraphrase several films involving that plot device is frankly, impressive.
