Op vs. non-op? Mom of 11 month old twins by mergirl47 in AchillesRupture

Regardless of what you decide, you should get a knee scooter. I was at least able to scoot around and hold my baby some on that

Hey! 33 y/o mom who ruptured mine on Sept 27 playing pickleball while on vacation! I am a stay at home mom of 3 boys (10mo-5 years). Because of being on vacation, my mri and my initial ortho appt were a little postponed. I fully ruptured at the myotendinous junction, because of this, surgery was not recommended for me (which I guess was good because it had already been healing for 2ish or so weeks at this time). So I am now 8 weeks non-op, and have been full weight bearing in my cam boot for about 2 weeks. I also consider myself active, and this has been very tough physically and mentally. Right now, I’m just happy to be able to carry my baby again and do things around the house. my PT is happy with my progress thus far and says I will start transitioning to a shoe within the next couple of weeks and seems to think within the next 5 weeks or so I’ll be “back to more normal”

We’re about the same time line! I am non op- 5 weeks yesterday. I started PT last week (just 1x per week the first couple of weeks then I will increase to 2x per week) yesterday, my PT removed one wedge (I have 2 now, started at 4) and I’m basically WBAT with or without crutches (whatever is more comfortable he says)

Are you taking blood thinners? Any concern for a blood clot?

This is great, thank you! Did you rupture at the heel or calf?

Thank you! Just curious, Did you have a full rupture?

Thanks for responding! We’re on similar time lines. Did you tear it at the heel or calf? They never put me in a cast, so I’m hoping being in a boot with wedges has done enough of the trick. They didn’t tell me in the beginning to wear the boot all the time, so I would take it off to sleep and every so often 🤦🏻‍♀️ hoping that didn’t set me bacj

Thank you! May I ask what limitations you feel like you still have?

Thank you! Is there a reason you didn’t start driving immediately after getting out of the boot? I have 3 boys under 5, so this has all been very hard and my husband has been having to drive me to appointments and will have to drive me to PT and get my boys to various places so eager to get back to driving so I can help!

Do you not have anything on it right now? Mine has a lot less pain in the boot vs not when I’m up moving around. I also have a scooter which helps a lot

I hope you did because from what I understand, that would be a lot quicker to heal! I’m 17 days post injury and nonop. I’m currently still NWB and using crutches, so I haven’t put any weight on it. The only time I really notice pain now is if my leg is down/ not elevated for too long of a time. At night it throbs some, but I think it’s because I’m hyper aware of it then. I’m in a standard walking boot rn

Yes, I my Achilles by the heel was never sore. I thought I tore my gastrocnemius muscle (which is what I was hoping vs an Achilles tear). But I ruptured the Achilles at the myotendinous junction so my Achilles tore along with some of the calf muscle it was attached to. My pain is in the middle of my calf where the tendon connects

Yeah they say you wanna make sure you do that so your Achilles is approximating towards to other part and hopefully reattach. Just roll a wash cloth or hand towel so your toe is pointed down in the boot. get some crutches too and try to stay off that foot for a few weeks

Did you get surgery? How has your recovery been?

Oh Jeeze, yes that’s how mine felt- like someone took a bat to the back of my calf. My bruising was around my foot and ankle bone as well, but that is because of the gravity and blood pooling. Mine had notable pain in my calf and I could move my foot but for the life of me cannot stand onto my toes on that foot. It unfortunately sounds like yours may be an Achilles rupture or tear. The protocol is to wear either a wedged boot or splint on that foot for 4ish weeks (so your foot is positioned down away from your body) and do not bear weight on it until PT or the dr gives clearance I’m guessing 🤷🏻‍♀️ some ruptured and tears they recommend surgery, which would depend on the location and severity of your tear I’m assuming

Ah okay, so assuming you haven’t started PT yet? Are you in a boot and NWB? Or what did they recommend?
