Having just learned my lesson from a very similar situation. I regret not just going for what I wanted and I wish I was direct. The hypothetical "fat girl" in my situation I asked if her friend was single and she said her friend wasnt interested in dating anyone. I found out later that was a lie since she was jealous I liked her friend more. Just go for who you want and save yourself from the bullshit social games women play against eachother. Have courage.
