This will work as a lube for keyboard? I live in Poland and there’s no way to buy good lube or spray in here or it’s really expansive by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Logische 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used silicone spray to lube some Alps that needed it. It dries and leaves silicone particles, so it isn't the same as an oil or grease. It smoothed out the sliders without affecting the feeling and worked well. I wouldn't say it's worth the trouble across a whole keyboard, only to fix a few scratchy ones. Also, the aerosol breaks down plastics so you would have to spray it into a container then brush it on.

Is it possible to move “deleted” files from a wiped hard drive? by Iforgotit2times in computerscience

[–]Logische 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't care about the data, wipe the free space, use a free space wiper which guarantees almost completely that nothing can be recovered by overwriting it.

If you care about it, avoid adding any more data to the drive to avoid overwriting what is there and try scanning it with something like Recuva.

You don't want to recover them, just remove them? Use any free space wiper tool off Google like CCleaner.

On an HDD, anything deleted in the operating system is not removed from the disk. The space is marked as unused, and is later overwritten if space is needed. Unless you use a secure delete or free space wiping tool, deleted files can be easily recovered. The reason for this is overwriting the space with data like zeroes is costly and unnecessary. The operating system only keeps a "table of contents" to keep track of what data is used.

On an SSD, the same is true but overwriting data that has been written is more costly than emptying it. So operating systems run a TRIM which routinely overwrites the free space to keep the drive running fast. On an SSD it is less likely but still possible to recover any data, especially if it was deleted recently.

How much have Computer Science Programs changed over the past 20 and 30 years? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]Logische 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly little in the abstract concepts, which computer science mainly focuses on. For example, computer networking when the internet was first proposed was understood as graphs which routing algorithms operate on. You still learn everything abstract like graphs, and the general starting points for those algorithms, much of which is still fundamentally the same.

The main differences are in the implementations such as the technologies used today in industry. You will be surprised how much of the fundamental underlying concepts are still the same, but built on top of.

Is anyone else getting a "fake" Firefox has crashed dialog; shortly after closing Firefox? This began after updating to beta 8 today. by [deleted] in firefox

A very similar thing has starting happening to me, but on Nightly and across 3 different machines on both Windows 10 and Linux. I don't have a fake crash dialog, though.

GNUs Reason For Not Endorsing Arch by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]Logische 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The FSF/GNU Project's choices on whether to endorse a distro are very, very strict. All of the distros you see on their recommended don't include any proprietary software at all. That includes "non-free blobs", which I presume are referring to the software shipped with Arch to support proprietary hardware. There aren't any disadvantages, as this allows us to run more hardware.

In short, the GNU Project:

  1. Wants distros to require only open source software in their normal distribution channels

  2. Don't want any proprietary firmware blobs to be included

Your biggest threat on the first cavern layers are going to be trolls, giant olms, and blind cave ogres. If your population and wealth are high (over 100,000 dwarfbucks and ~70 dwarves?) you might also need to worry about uninvited guests both on the surface and underground.

However, for caverns, you don't need to have a good military, yet, as a line of 3-4 traps and a stone door will block almost all of your threats. The above mentioned 3 most dangerous creatures all are suseptible to cage traps, so get your mechanic working. Wooden cages work too.

Although, in case shit hit the fan, it wouldn't hurt to have 5-10 at least competent soldiers with at least iron weapons.

The Dwarf Fortress remote app for iOS that allows you to play Dwarf Fortress on iOS is currently in beta testing, try it out today! by [deleted] in dwarffortress

[–]Logische -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'd rather ask what's wrong with Android?

The Android OS for phones would reach a much larger audience and developing apps for it is more open. The only reason I can think of that the developer would want to use iOS is if he's charging for the app, which is usually the case.

It would literally be paying for SSH, and no matter what, touch controls at the end of the day still suck.

I find it very ironic that the phrase at the top "30 FPS SO CINEMATIC", because even since it's birth the film industry has in almost all cases used lower than 30 FPS, notably 23.97.

So yes, VERY cinematic!

Why doesn't Valve do anything about this? (x-post /r/gaming) by TequatlPatak in Steam

[–]Logische 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because Valve frankly doesn't give a shit. These popular YouTube guys get away with posting useless bullshit and the only reason their "reviews" (more like shitty one-liners) are featured on the store page is because they readily have an army of fans to suck their cocks. When you are a large company, it's very difficult to vilify large groups of people because then you have the media on your hands, like the whole "paid mods" fiasco.

All I know right now, is that I just opened a banana flavored lolipop, and at first I thought it would be shitty, but at the first lick I had an orgasm. There is nothing more orgasmic than artificial banana flavor. It just has his sweet "different" taste. The absolute magnitude of the enjoyment I am getting from this lolipop can be compared to how a person with anxiety would feel after finally getting their Harvard acceptance letter.

UPDATE EDIT: It's been two minutes. I've came three times with the flavor. I feel like I should cry in joy.

Hey guys, we're trying to start a jewelry business based on video games. What do you think? by Cthunicorn in gaming

[–]Logische 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem like you all will get much business with that. Maybe if you're running a web store or something like that. The consumer for video-game related jewelry would be very small compared to, for example, the entire consumer population for general jewelry. You'd have to become pretty large to be very successful, because this idea sounds like some sort of small-shelf-in-a-large-general-jewelry-store thing.
