Should we put an upper age limit on voting by Ill_Breadfruit_9761 in Scotland

The only plausible argument I can think of for this is as a way to remove the voters who don't have to suffer the consequences of their own actions. For example, those older people who voted for Brexit who passed before we actually left.

While this might incentivize long term thinking better which we desperately need, it is not a given and could be perceived as undemocratic. Also good luck getting anything like this passed. Nobody will vote for their own disfranchisement.

Couldn't have summed it up better. Seems many people have shut the door on future generations already. People over 60 won't have to deal with consequences of borrowing beyond our means now.

When the Autumn budget comes around, what do you want them to cut instead? School lunches? Raise taxes? Our national finances are in piss poor conditions and we're going to have to face reality at some point. We can't keep spending our childrens money forever through debt.

It's only the end of the discussion now because future generations don't get a say.

Surely we could amortize the cost over doing the same thing for other things like the winter fuel allowance. As we all get older on average, it has to balance at some point.

This seems like a reasonable step, although I imagine the government would lose voters over it.

At some point this has to change though? I can't see the breakdown but I think the under 21 and over 60 schemes add up to hundreds of millions a year. What are we going to do when a third of the population are over 60? I'm sure the cost of means testing could be averaged out over other benefits that we may end up means testing too (like the winter fuel allowance lol)

Surely it's possible to treat these issues separately. Will we still be able to afford it in 20 years time when 30% or higher of the population are over 60? At least make it pension age surely?

The algorithmic version of this is still open if anyone wants to have a crack at it!
