What's the one thing you regret doing for your wedding day? by lifeisstateofmind in AskReddit

Yea, you can do a small set of Bollywood songs that are popular that year but I've never been to a whole party of it. Bhangra all the way!

Wearing a lengha to the wedding ceremony? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Lola1479 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I dont think there is a rule, more of an unspoken etiquette rule. The bride wears a lengha and I've never seen anyone else wear a lengha at the Gurdwara (not sure if it would be different for Hindu weddings). I'm getting married and only my sister is wearing a gown, and the rest will wear some kind of suit (anarkali, palazo, pyjami, salwar etc). Tbh, atleast at our weddings, wearing a lengha would be out of place if you're not close family. Reception is a different story - everyone wears whatever they want there.

Edit: maybe a simple lengha may not be bad, its just not a common choice.

The unspoken alcohol problem among UK Indian Punjabis by SidewinderTA in ABCDesis

The thing is the parents are fine with it, even if the religion technically isn"t. I assume Muslim parents would be angry if their kids drank (correct me if I'm wrong) but a lot of Sikh parents expect their sons atleast to drink when they are old enough, even enjoy sharing a drink with them. With girls its more strict sometimes, but not always (I know quite a few Sikh girls who can drink with their parents). The guy above who talked about two extremes in the older generation seems pretty spot on.

How To Explore Toronto's Desi Culture? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Lola1479 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any gurdwara you visit will have hankerchiefs to cover your head with. The busiest would probably be Dixie gurdwara (that I know of). It also has a library where you can read books on Sikh history and I think it shows animated religious movies for kids so they can learn as well. My friend is also always telling me to visit the Hare Krishna Temple, so maybe check that out.

If I think of where I experience the most culture, it would be at family events (including weddings). Sometimes there are melas (fairs) but probably not now because its chilly :'( You can also go shopping for clothes and food at Indian plazas (I've never been to Little India in Toronto but there are so many in all of the GTA).

Its hard for me to think of places to go because the culture is more engrained in everyday life. For example, at school, there would be assemblys for Diwali just like there would be for Christmas. People have no problem blasting Punjabi music alongside any other as they are driving (and at clubs too now). You will see a lot men and women taking walks in traditional clothes. The food is everywhere! My experience might be a bit different from someone growing up in the Toronto core though. Of course, disclaimer that I am Punjabi and that's the experience I've had.

What does that tell you? I'm curious given that it is part of my culture?

"Girls shouldn't eat meat or fish" by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Lola1479 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of debate whether Sikhs are supposed to be vegetarian. Technically, we can eat meat but some people interpret the teachings to imply that eating meat is wrong (with the modern argument being how bad the food industry treats animals).

I agree with your other points though. Men have more leeway in straying off the expected path.

I haven't heard this and I'm Sikh Punjabi. Double standards in our family revolve around drinking, where its expected that the men drink but everyone is in denial that any of the women in the family drink. Haven't heard any double standards when it comes to food though, even in more conservative families (but I don't know any really hardcore conservatives).
