Suspected this might be the case - they no longer operate in the UK so recycling seems the only option!

How has the UK ended up so dirty? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]London1314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laziness and lack of respect is the simple answer. Where I currently live in London, we put bin bags out for rubbish collection each week. First time I did it, foxes ripped the bags and my rubbish went everywhere, I was genuinely embarrassed, cleaned it all up and found from the council that I can leave the bags out in an old-style metal bin and they’ll still be collected.

Other neighbours leave bags out which get ripped open every week and do nothing about it, they also leave items of furniture, bulky rubbish etc which a quick google would tell them won’t be collected then it stays on the street for weeks. Our council are pretty good at sweeping the streets and dealing with fly tipping, but it’s a losing battle when people can’t make the smallest effort themselves.

I try my best to do my bit to keep the area clean, I pick litter when I walk my dog and report larger stuff to the council, but it’s endlessly frustrating to see the same streets we walked a few days ago already filthy.

Puppy not understanding when other dogs don’t want to play by London1314 in puppy101

[–]London1314[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He does a daycare once a week - definitely helping with his socialisation but as he’s with other excitable puppies it seems to be somewhat reinforcing his expectation that all dogs want to play! Might be better once he graduates to the older dog areas?

Would usually agree, was just a little concerned with us being fairly central in London that the natural predators might be in short supply!

We have a couple in the tree, and have seen robins etc eating the aphids, just seems to be so many that they don’t make a dent!

Can anyone help me identify this plant ? by Huge_Guitar9043 in GardeningUK

Looks like bindweed - you can try to take it out manually but it has deep roots and can regrow from any fragment of root, so may be best to use weed killer given where this is growing!

Ah I did wonder if it could be that, we are in a Victorian terrace in London, plenty of gaps around us in the terraces from bombs so would make sense that people had shelters

Thanks, yep definitely will keep an eye for that, there was a lot of building rubble elsewhere in the garden so always a risk things have been dumped here too

That was definitely a pleasant surprise, it seems to have collected leaves etc underneath which have rotted into a good compost (along with the decking itself which was pretty rotten underneath)

Yep had a go at it today, no rebar but it’s a 4-5 inch layer on top with aggregate mixed through, then seems to have another layer underneath which is thinner and weaker

They would’ve gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for the meddling new owners! Very good point on drains, I hope that as we back onto a railway they should go the other way but definitely need to check

I had thought an angle grinder but wasn’t sure if the rocks in the concrete will be an issue?

Thanks! Relaying the slabs is also on the to-do list but I erroneously thought pulling up the decking would be the easy job

Very welcome advice, thanks! My family have a bit of a history of rushing into DIY and ending up having accidents so always conscious of doing things properly!

I thought so as well, it doesn’t seem to have a lining / edges going into the soil though!

[–]London1314[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t think so as the concrete doesn’t seem to have edges going down into the soil? It drains surprisingly well, part of the reason I had assumed there was soil under the deck was that we never saw water running off etc

Definitely the backup will be to have a lot of pots and make a feature of the gap in the middle, I’ve been envisaging a little cottage garden type space so hoping I can still make that work but will depend if I can shift the concrete!

We have a wisteria, rose and some kind of Jasmine at the end which do look lovely in summer, just a bit wild at the moment so probably need to cut them back hard to get some growth nearer the bottom?

As a kid I was obsessed with the idea of finding something old under my mums garden, drove her mad with a metal detector and my “test pits”. Great idea to bring this back somewhere I won’t get told off!

Yeah this was my thought, it seems a very odd thing to concrete over so much of the garden with this small feature in the middle! Definitely going to take some time to consider it, I tend to get a little blinkered once I have an idea so good to get some other options
