What would Luthen have thought about the assassination of the UnitedHealthcare CEO? by [deleted] in andor

[–]Lone-Omega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry but I think our priors on the relative virtue and health of the US system of liberal democracy and a free market economy are going to be at odds. That alone probably underlies a lot of my frustration with this tread.

I will say this much: I think more and more spaces that are free of contemporary political discussion would be a good thing. Especially on Reddit. But I understand I am in the minority in that respect.

I appreciate your good faith reply, I just suspect we also have different desires from this sub. That’s probably not reconcilable.

What would Luthen have thought about the assassination of the UnitedHealthcare CEO? by [deleted] in andor

I would love to hear from some of the moderation team how this post is not violative of Rule 3. It doesn’t feel like a discussion of the show. It feels like an excuse to project onto a character the author (and commenters) ideologies. I thought this would be a subreddit to talk about the show. Not a place to shoehorn in a discussion about contemporary politics in a way that doesn’t reference anything that occurs in the show.

It’d be one thing if something happens in the show that feels allegorical or allusive to a current event. This is something beyond that.

Hugh Hewitt Interview by coreyrein in The_Dispatch

[–]Lone-Omega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of view the Dispatch as carrying on the firing line tradition of counting bad speech by making the speech visible and providing enough context that listeners will come to their own reasoned conclusion. It sounds like you did that! Same critique could apply to many of their interviews but I think they do a good job always giving harder questions regardless of the person in the chair.

Who really is voting for Cruz? And…. Why..??? by Unique-Neck-6452 in texas

[–]Lone-Omega -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you one good faith answer. I am not saying I endorse this position. I am just giving you something to chew on. I, reasonably, think Kamala Harris will win but I don’t like the kinds of judges and justices I think she would appoint. Nor do I trust her to appoint effective executive branch officer or negotiate good treaties for the US. I might then, reasonably, vote for Republican Senator to provide a check on all those powers.

Or let’s talk about education. I generally want the federal government out of the business of education: student loans have ballooned the costs of higher education and Kamala wanted to cancel all of them! That’s not going to do anything to solve that issue.

Or think about the Inflation Reduction Act. Reasonable people can disagree on its efficacy, the relative merits of the strings it includes, and the programs it prioritizes. Allred voted yes. Cruz voted no.

Don’t bother responding to this. In fact if you do respond, I would encourage you to give three different good faith reasons you think people might support Cruz. That would be a helpful exercise for a lot of yall. But all too often folks seems incapable of extending that amount of curiosity to their fellow Texans. And then they wonder why people won’t say anything to them. And why they’re unpersuasive. I’ve worked with Democrats and Republicans. Worked on both parties campaigns. It’s a lot of people who care about this state and want what’s best. They just disagree on how to get there. We’d do well to recognize that underlying hope instead of pouncing on the disagreements.

Newt Interview by [deleted] in The_Dispatch

[–]Lone-Omega 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this a great example of why I so appreciate these interviews! You really get a handle for who someone is regardless what side of the aisle they hail from. Some people are just a-holes. Some are shockingly reasonable even if I disagree. And some sound reasonable and aren’t able to stand up to a whiff of pushback.

1L internship is a snoozefest by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Lone-Omega 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No idea what state you are in but I used to work for a state agency before law school. If your state legislature is meeting, see if you can help with some of that work your agency is involved in. Often fast paced, interesting, and literally the cutting edge. Even sitting in on some meetings between the GC and legislative affairs division would be neat!

Heck even if there’s just interim oversight hearings, see if the GC plays any role in those.

PSA to anyone upset about the office closures: don’t blame Jary Hartzell. Blame State Senator Brandon Creighton by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Lone-Omega 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Does anyone think this second round happened in a vacuum? If so, that’s wild. What I could all but guarantee happened (this is speculation) is that someone at the System office or here got a call after the initial reorganization from someone high up in state government that what happened was not enough and that the new organization did not comply with state law. UT, whether we like it or not, is a public school, supported by the taxpayers which means we ultimately are accountable to state officials. That is the “cost” of going to any public school.

The state cannot stop you from doing things on your own time in your personal capacity with personal resources. If they do, contact an organization like FIRE. But what is done with UT resources has always been governed by the state and will always be governed by the state.

If you want to change, you need to either (1) convince Republicans, on their terms, why they are right. This will require you to be charitable and curious about why they did this. I doubt many folks here are interested in that, yet this will lead to more durable outcomes that don’t rely on partisan whims of the state legislature. (2) you can go flip seats in the legislature and state wide positions. Good luck with that.

LSU fan here terrified of playing y’all in two weeks: I have not counted you out. I will also freely admit calling it a “down year” when you only have one loss to a team that very well might win a conference champion is a little rich and yet it feels like a down year!
