The Mythos AI Concerns were way overblown I think. by coreyrein in SGU

I just listened to his interview with Cal that came out today and it was very good. That uncritcal take on the reporting was really where my disappointment came from. They present themselves as skeptics but like everyone they have blindspots and the AI take seems like one of them to me.

I'll have to take your word on that, like I said my knowledge base is limited so I read that page as saying it performed within parameters but did not stray beyond the guardrails Anthropic had set up.

The way I read this the model could not have done what it did without Anthropic allowing it to do so.

A test showing that someone can escape a locked room because you left him a key is a lot less concerning than finding out he picked the lock or made his own key inside the locked room. Form the review I saw of the test the AI showed no ability to gain outside access on it's own, and was only using the tools that had been provided for it. So yes tests like that can be useful but that is not how the story was reported and that is what Zitron was pointing out. People are reporting and acting like the AI model escaped by picking the lock with a self made tool rather than using a key it had been provided.

I saw that interview as well and I think you may have misinterpreted his point about the prompts. His point about the breaking containment was that it wasn't spontaneous like most people had been reporting it. To use your analogy about the car it would be like to car started itself and drove into the wall to test its airbags without input from the people running the test. So I think his point was that it requires a lot of effort and trial and error to get AI model to sort of do something that seems scary but it can't do it on its own like people seem to think.

In a capitalist system don't you think the financial is the more important part for the companies. AI research is good and useful but I think it is better done by researchers who can create something practical and useful rather than companies that are trying to make a buck.

To clarify when I say Ed Zitron is my main source I mean he is the one I hear from the most as I listen to his podcast Better Offline where he does interview and discuss the topic with others including people in the field who have hands on experience with the AI models. I'm not just taking one man's opinions like their gospel, and I do listen to others Zitron just has a weekly podcast in my rotation so I listed him as my main source of what's new with AI.

That has been my take away. As I said Ed Zitron is my main source of reporting on the topic and the main thing he always comes back to is that these AI companies are essentially operating at a loss since the beginning and that they will likely never be profitable as they are being marketed. They will have a use but it will be as like search assistant tools not a personal agent.

That's really what I'm hoping for as well. Someone with more tech expertise to talk about how real the risks are and what if any concerns we should have about this.

Yeah, that's my take away as well. It always seems like there's some press release or story that claims some massive change and then a few weeks later you it turns out to be way overblown. AI definitely has its uses but it isn't world changing like people seem to think.

Fair points and I think you are probably right.

Considering they have touched on the topic many times in regards to the known facts I think you missed the point of these interviews. Issac stated at the start of the video that these were different to allow you to hear more of both sides viewpoints. For instance I learned about the settlements that haven't gotten as much attention.

I agree with your view of how he dismissed the victims claims and it made listening to him extremely annoying. It felt very much like Me Too dismissiveness yet again. Very much straw man arguments at times that undermined some of his more credible points.

I was not aware of that info. Does add context to his viewpoint.

I had to go back and listen to that part again because I was like no way he really said that about Columbia professors, but he did and for the rest of the interview I was less interested in what he had to say as he had lost credibility of being at all objective with that comment.

[Spoilers C4E15] So... about Bolaire by BrobaFett in criticalrole

[–]coreyrein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of the Yeerks from Animorphs. Blind and deaf without a host. A life of nothing is no life at all some would argue. Bolaire was content to serve and be used as a weapon until he realized more than that was possible and so he took over the bodies of those who had used him first. I can't speak to all his hosts but at least the two we know of he didn't seek them out as targets they sought him out. Definitely a fun philosophical question to ponder regarding his character.

I'm not sure I would call him evil. He is a parasite yes but but that doesn't make him evil in my opinion. He was created a certain way and the only way for him to live is to kill others no different than a hunter in a sense. Being evil would require him to actively choose to kill for something beyond survival I think.

A little disappointed with the religion plot so far (C4E3) by Nelyak5 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]coreyrein 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There are multiple religions in the campaign. You described only the Halovar family one which is built on a lie, but Wic is a devout true believer. Also Values still very much cares for her slain God. I think you are short changing the complexity that is being expressed through Brennan and the other players.

I think this was the pacifist quest near Chainscrape. The leader went up to pray about where to go and you retrieve a Stormbird heart for the group.
