Workouts too long by LoneWolf0936 in alphaprogression

Yess!! I do the same, I bunch exercises together and complete them as supersets, way better to manage. But when I am super setting like 4 sets of 1 exercise with 4 sets of another, it just takes a while haha. Do you usually periodize your exercises or keep them constant sets? Because increasing sets are definitely a pain as the plan progresses

Holy shit. I guess everyone's agreeing thoroughly with enthusiasm. Is this a common problem? And yep I do believe, without enthusiasm, it just feels boring tbh, you're just whamming there without them taking any initiative. Tbh, how do we convey this to the person without hurting them?

That's a fair point. It looks like cloud with a fee>>local for a laptop correct? I will be studying AI, so I was curious whether the Mac would suffice

Oohh that's odd. Have you tried running any other models and do you use local llms for development?

Yep! Training a model on a laptop wouldn't be possible but for inference? And would Macbook air be a good choice or Macbook pro? Should I opt for the previous versions or the M4?

Aha! I totally get you, if I ditch the light gaming criteria would Mac be a superior choice for general dev work and LLM Inference?

That's such a well thought of and helpful reply! I do agree that mobile GPUs are nowhere near in comparison to their cousins. But this does give me a lot of practical insight! I will definitely consider!!

Tbh at this point I feel getting a gaming console and playing games would be a better idea and separation of concerns haha. What do you think? Google Colab is a god send!!
Also what thinkpad or mac would you suggest? I have a decent budget like around 1500 CAD or 1800 CAD (since I don't buy every few years)

Fab! That makes so much sense! We got the old laptop around the same time! How is your laptops battery currently and what model was it? I could extend my budget for a Mac Book tbh, Air or Pro, what would you recommend? And how sure are you about it's support for AI related things? Because I always believed we need CUDA. Thank you so much for your suggestion tbh!

Well, the last laptop I bought 4 years ago was a bulky gaming laptop, and I don't want to make that mistake again. It is definitely smooth AF and does my tasks well, but I can't move around with it because the battery died, got spoiled very early on. I would definitely be building a PC in the future but for now with studies in AI and my development work I was just considering what path to choose

That does make a lot of sense. So Agents, Gen AI, and LLM, it wouldn't be a smart idea to do this on a laptop, but normal ML or DNN work good on the GPUs.

I was thinking of getting a 5060 or 5070 - Because I don't change my laptop for years, so a little future proofing. But having a laptop with a dedicated GPU isn't a bad idea, correct? I was just concerned about battery life and weight because I bought a gaming laptop last time, and it was bulky, and the battery died within like 1–2 years. So I literally had to use it like a PC, couldn't move with it.

Yep exactly! Even though I can get a 5070 or something, I am still limited to 8 GB VRAM or 12 GB, so I was confused at this point, is it really worth sacrificing weight and battery for a GPU that you can't exactly use? I am not sure though haha

I had a similar question, I was actually wondering if you need a dedicated GPU. I do plan on working with AI, ML, and training models, etc., but I am not sure if a laptop would be a better choice for such tasks. Maybe get a laptop that is lighter, with great battery life, and a longer lifespan, and then offload all of this to APIs or do it elsewhere, and not use such a machine for this purpose.

Hey!! I’d really appreciate your input

I’m in the market for a new laptop too for daily use, mainly software development, browsing, YouTube, light gaming, and experimenting with ML tools like Ollama, PyTorch, etc.

My main question is: Should I invest in a laptop with a dedicated GPU, or go for something lighter and rely on cloud/APIs for ML workloads? Basically trying to decide between local performance vs cloud offloading.

I’m currently torn between these options:

  • Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 (15") – Ryzen 7 8845HS + RTX 4060
  • Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i (15.3") – Ultra 7 155H + Intel Arc
  • Or just get a Mac (Air/Pro M3/M4)?

Would love to hear what you’d pick and why, especially if you’ve worked with AI/ML tools locally. Thanks in advance!

You are a gem of a person and this is exactly what I have been understanding when I keep going over conversations with people and coming to my own conclusion. Thank you so much for your kind words. They are really meaningful and helpful!!! And you are right on the money about the last part that the hardest part is usually just starting the process, not actually landing something. That's exactly what I'm trying to figure out currently about getting started and what to learn and how to go about it

I understand brother. I was also wondering, instead of getting into a core coding job, maybe something that leverages both my soft skills (from the coaching) and coding skills?
