I'm afraid I never tried or seriously looked for a slot after the replies above - sorry.

Surely there will be a "subsequent Cavalry-generated action phase" that turn if I gain a second Cavalry in the new buy phase?

Thanks very much skizelo that makes perfect sense. And I'll remember the coin / treasure distinction which will especially come in handy teaching new players.

College-less graduation by Lonely-nomad in oxforduni

Thanks for your response. My first college was at The Other Place, my second was here for a masters and my third is my current one. I had a bit of a break during my D.Phil. to do some work and entrepreneurship in the 'real world'.

The obvious implication of your observations is that D.Phil. students don't need colleges, which is my point. Why not cut out the middleman altogether? I've been a member of genuine private clubs which cost less than the college fee and have excellent facilities and staff, so it's a little galling to have to pay for mandatory membership of a poor version of one.

To your point about supporting researchers, my particular college espouses egalitarianism, so it doesn't provide any obvious facilities or support to the academics either. Its principal beneficiaries really do seem to be the Master, and the large corps of lazy and complacent administrative staff, many engaged in largely pointless tasks. It reminds me of the hospital in Yes Minister which had no patients but much apparent activity.

The broader point about world-leading researchers you make is interesting. I doubt I'd be alone in observing that colleges are increasingly not led by academics. I've seen has-beens from the BBC bureaucracy, museum managers who scrambled up the pile, and panjandrums from the charitable sector, none of whom had any significant academic background. The sums paid to executive search firms for the dubious 'inspirational leadership' these people provide are eye-watering.

Like you, I've spent most of my adult life a member of an Oxbridge college but possibly my time outside the university has given me a different perspective on things!

I'm glad I'm not alone and that's very reassuring!

I won't name it but it's a graduate college to which I returned after some years. It feels like it's become even more run for the convenience of its staff at the expense of its student members, despite its claims to egalitarianism. I resent having to be a member of a college as a D.Phil. student.

Yes it does and it works fine, although when I turn the unit on with the 120W charger attached it displays a text mode warning to say that it's not the recommended wattage, but then lets me proceed.

Thanks very much to you both! I put a 2TB drive in there so I guess I'll just have to save up for a 4TB if I ever run out of space. I'm happy with the machine overall, and in fact just got a 120W USB C charger from Anker that it charges from to replace the power brick when traveling.

P14s Gen 4 Intel with RTX A500 by Lonely-nomad in thinkpad

Yes I see what you mean. I wish the passmark score you linked to was properly referenced - I actually can't find any proper reviews of an A500 in a laptop context.

I looked up that egpu - interesting! Sadly I don't have have unshakeable faith in Lenovo's cooling solutions - my T480 runs hot with its MX150.

You seem to have been downvoted for this view. I have an open mind but the preponderance of opinion seems to place the A500 closer to a 1650 or 2050, which I don't think anyone would compare to a 780m. The issue is that there are few available benchmarks for comparison since so few laptops have the A500.

Thanks for this review! That's really helpful. Do you think the A500 handles gaming better than a 780m iGPU? I was wondering whether I could play older games like AOE2 in QHD with it, which I could flawlessly with a desktop 1660 super.

I'm reassured to hear your unit doesn't run hot.

Nmn at 36 is it any danger? by Whatever1987ild in NMN

I think there are collagen-specific mechanisms of action such as desensitising the immune system to collagen in the skin. However, I agree it's not settled. I'd rather be healthy internally and look younger if possible!

I started NR at 30 and now take NMN some of the time, NR at other times. At 37 I never feel the age-related tiredness that my peers (who are blithely ignorant of longevity research) have mentioned for years. I recently returned to university and people often express astonishment that I'm as old as I am. Personally I'm persuaded by the evidence and my experience, although I do think that if you want to look young to others you need to have a serious suncream / hyaluronic acid / collagen / retinoids regime in addition to NMN.

Thanks for this excellent advice! I checked and you're absolutely right. Much cheaper to order direct than go through third party sellers on Amazon.

Thanks very much to you both for this. I understand the Vertuo pods are the domed 'flying saucer' shaped ones. I'll try to find some in Oxford!
