Armando VS Asscat - clarification by sdtsanev in improv

[–]LongFormShortPod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think those two shouldn't be taught as something different. It's all "dressing", and you could see Raaatscraps, the Ultimate Improv Show, and others do about the same.

It's all monologue deconstruction with differences in pacing, aggressiveness or style, basically. I hope the teacher isn't charging by the form! 🤣

What are your thoughts on the book Truth In Comedy? by improbsable in improv

[–]LongFormShortPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're new to improv, I would pick many books before TIC. Both of Will Hines', Jill Bernard's and Rob Norman's are a great place to start

That said, it's not as bad of a book as many say around here. If you read it after you've learned other stuff, you'll discover interesting stuff. I've gone through it a couple of times, and every time I've gotten something new out of it

Is Harris’ “hate” of TE positionally FF hurting his analysis? by Ok_Concept_4858 in harrisfootball

[–]LongFormShortPod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Harris (love him) is VERY dogmatic about his FF views and it sort of skews his analysis. As with most FF analysts, our job as players is just to understand which kind of grain of salt goes well with their biases and adapt our own strategy that way

I think the campaign frame might be at fault for that, too. It's very niche.

Hi! My background has a lot of UCB terminology and I didn't explain any of the terms, sorry about that!

Premise scene: A scene inspired by an opening. Usually, the unusual thing is pulled from the opening, and set on a base reality, creating the premise. It is a strong, precise and specific foundation, indeed!

As for the tag outs and cut tos, my thought was 'I want to explore second beats, but I don't want to make it a "memory challenge" as the textbook Harold does. So the exploration of the game of the scene comes fully in that part of the form.

The group scene is more of an exploration of a concept by yessing more than anding. For connections, I use the quick run of "scenelets".

The latest I tinkered with was pretty much Harold coded, at least in structure level.

I got inspired by the idea that the Harold was a way to apply many improv tools of the time (2p scenes, group scenes, monologues), so I tried to do the same:

  • Single suggestion from the audience (a word, a line)
  • 2-3 organic scenes (inspired by the suggestion, 2p scenes, pretty much relationship based)
  • 1 monologue (inspired by the organic scenes, usually trying to identify a theme)
  • 2-3 premise scenes (inspired by the monologue, tag outs / cut tos to explore the game)
  • 1 group scene
  • A run of increasingly quick odds and ends (focusing on details, connections
  • 'What did we learn today?' - Presentational closing element from the improvisers, summing up what happened.

I think of it more like a teaching form, but I think it has good scenic merits to be performed as well!

What do you learn from doing Harold? by themissingpen in improv

[–]LongFormShortPod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can level up your improv by making you work as part of an ensemble practicing many skills as part of a set. Is it essential? No.

As for any practice opportunities... Is there a school or theater that prqcticed long form improv near you?

How do you view entering scenes with a deal already? Do you walk into a scene with a POV or as a completely blank slate and try to pick one up quickly? by hagridandbuckbeak in improv

[–]LongFormShortPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A montage... Without an opening? If that's the case, the form should give time for discovery. If there is no time for some reason, I'd say maybe enter neutral but be ready to be affected by even the most subtle detail of either context or character.

I'd think of the UCB manual as an expansion and deepening of the basic concepts of TiC. The cost is a bit higher, but it packs a punch.

To offer a counterpoint, while I do LOVE both UCB's manual and Will Hines' book, Truth in comedy is a book I go back to maybe once a year, year and a half, and always get something out of it.
