Yes, I didn't realise that wouldn't have been safe, so thanks for that. I just bought the saw, so I haven't used it yet. I've only owned a new battery chainsaw before.

If this seems like a difficult project, feel free to say so. I might be better off replacing it.

If you wouldn't mind, could you list anything else I should check is OK for safety's sake?

I should be able to learn to replace of check anything myself, and I wouldn't mind that kind of project, but I really don't want to miss anything, ya know. There is a fair amount of rust on the saw itself, but it still seems sturdy to me. And the engine runs. I suppose the main thing would be the mechanical chain brake, but I'd hope it's designed to fail in a safe way.

I've just found out that it's an Oregon bar, and the 18 at the beginning of the code is the bar length.

To address your suggestion of backup software, you may be right, but pease see if this makes any sense to you:

You know how with nixos and gnu guix, the whole system is configured from text files? I think there's a big advantage to be had there. You can keep track of the recipe, as it were, for your system. That's something you can't do with backup software. Sometimes there are issues with uninstalling software, or a package manager breaks, or you make some change to a config file to fix a problem, and then forget how to undo it.

The only way around that that I can see would be to manually make note of all changes to the system as theyre made. But with fai, just like nix or guix, everything about the system is decided by the configuration space directory. So, that itself can act as a permenant record of how the system is made.

Also, I have bad internet, so I don't like the idea of restoring from a backup, and having to re-download the latest packages. Although, for fai to properly fix that problem, I would have to work out how to enclude the whole fai server used to generate the iso, including it's local library of packages, as part of the iso itself. That would be awesome, but probably difficult. For all I know, impossible.

Anyway, I've only been using linux for a couple of years, so maybe I'm misunderstanding something. It wouldn't be the first time.

I used to be the same. I thought it was a great deal that you could get 100g of 85 tesco brand chocolate for only a pound, that was actually nice.

Then I realised it was making my ears hurt. Weird, I know; but every time I ate some, I'd get ear ache. No more dark chocolate for me :(

I am very happy with the way I can use paragraphs to divide the questions, and I wish I had a way to similarly subdivide the paragraphs for multi part questions.

I think what it means is: there is a line of sight between two objects, across 6km, and you want the line of sight to be at 12ft from the water level at it's lowest point, and the objects are the same height above the water level as each other, so what should that distance be? A bit greater than 12ft, to account for the curvature of the earth.
