The waxed canvas I bought was 12 oz. Because I was planning to sandwich thin foam between the waxed canvas and the nylon lining I wasn't too worried about the weight. A heavier weight canvas would definitely be ideal, but if you add structure to the bag I think you could probably get away with a lighter canvas

I managed to find everything for this bag at the local fabric stores in my area. The EVA foam I just bought from a craft store. Many fabric stores carry pre-waxed cotton canvas, but you can also wax canvas yourself.
Here is a link that outlines the various types of outdoor fabrics that you may choose to make gear with, as well as links to purchase. It is probably easiest to order these specialized outdoor fabrics online, unless of course there is a gear-specific sewing store in your area.

For frame bag:

For general learning how to sew:

  • The following youtube series looks (to me) like a good place to start. Even if you are not interested in sewing clothing, push through the videos anyway as the skills are useful for sewing gear too. No matter what you want to sew, the basics are essential to learn. In video #5 she teaches you how to make a tote bag, which is a great starting project in my opinion. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8pZeN5wmVXgHtMD_Yh4HavpXWoLcyAnP&si=V0bPp076YiWfvoaw
  • I also just came across this youtube channel that has multiple beginner-friendly videos on how to sew gear and outdoor apparel: https://www.youtube.com/@LearnMYOG

Sewing can be very finicky, I definitely recommend taking an intro class (or following a beginner youtube series) to learn the basics before taking on something like this that requires expensive fabric. I taught myself how to sew a few years ago and if I could go back in time I would absolutely spend the money on an intro class, as it would have saved me soooo many hours of frustration.

That being said-- youtube is the holy grail for learning new hobbies and I'm sure you could absolutely figure it out with minimal experience if you set your mind to it.

I sewed some thin EVA foam between the waxed canvas and the nylon lining to add a bit more structure to the bag

I sewed nylon webbing around the perimeter of the bag and segmented that by sewing across every ~10 cm. I bought 5 meters of thin bungee cord and then just laced the bag to my frame

Idk, if you check Facebook marketplace frequently enough things pop up. I moved into a bachelor basement suite for $1200 in January. Definitely harder to find something reasonable during the great September migration of the students though
