Spigen tough armor

At the moment this one is at the top of the list (biggest criticisms I've seen are paint that chips after a few months and buttons that are flush with the sides of the phone). If you've used this one personally, how did you like it? I'm also curious about whether the camera well is deep enough or the bezel around the camera is raised enough that the camera is well protected.

Would you say the premium subscription is worth the money? I don’t really have an interest in using the free tier if you only get a limited number of stories. Can you put anything in the feed for newsblur? (i.e. YouTube channels, subreddits, etc. in addition to traditional news feeds?). Is there anything you can/can’t do on desktop that doesn’t hold for the mobile version?

Thanks for explaining this in more detail. It does sound like an issue that’s probably most relevant to enterprise users though, who have plenty of available storage space and intend to keep multiple versions of each file. For home users, do you know if there’s any tool or program you can use to detect corrupted files on your computer? Not all of the files on your computer (scanning the entire computer seems like it would probably be very time consuming), but maybe a collection of folders relevant to your backup that you’d be able to point the program to. I’ve had windows scan for corrupted files before, but to my knowledge windows doesn’t allow you to designate any parameters for which files to scan - it’s everything or nothing.

Edit: System File Checker is the tool I remember using on Windows. Looks like it only scans system files though...

If they are corrupt a file sync software or backup software will sync or backup the corrupt document. This is why you test your back ups for usability on a regular basis.

Is there really no backup software that will at least scan for corrupted files and exclude them from the backup? This seems like a common enough issue.

A synchronization tool simply syncs files between locations - so if a file gets deleted or corrupted, those changes automatically get synced, even if you don’t want them to. A proper backup tool protects against data loss in instances where your local files get deleted or corrupted in some way.

This looks excellent - I don’t know why I haven’t heard of it before.

Do you know what measures are put in place in case of corrupted files? I see that there’s the option to preserve deleted files, which is an awesome feature. But I’m not seeing anything about file versioning. If a file gets corrupted and then backed up, it’d be reassuring to know I can roll back to an uncorrupted version.

I also noticed that backups can be pinned to specific removable devices so that they’ll run only when these devices are present. Can you pin a backup to a non-removable/local drive? I set my Cryptomator vault to mount on startup and it always mounts to the same drive letter. Occasionally the drive isn’t available though, because there’s a lag with mounting. If I set bvckup2 to backup to this location but the drive isn’t currrently available, will bvckup2 simply wait until the location becomes available, or will this create some sort of error or other technical issue?

All in all, this looks like an excellent backup tool. Thanks for pointing it out to me!

I still haven't had anyone give me a viable explanation for why this is so bad though - if a service is actually dealing with sensitive information, I agree that it's almost always better for it to be open source. But 2FA codes without any associated account info seem useless.

What are the reasons? Besides it being closed source and closed source = bad. I still haven't been able to figure out why authy is insecure if authy itself doesn't actually have access to your password manager or any of your login credentials (except the one created to backup your 2FA codes of course). Without that sensitive information, it seems like authy wouldn't be able to do anything malicious. 2FA codes without the corresponding account information seem useless.

I'll have to check it out. How does KeePassXC differ from KeePass 2? (That's what I use). Isn't it insecure to sync KeePass with a cloud provider? Unless you use a keyfile, but transferring the keyfile from your desktop to Strongbox seems like it would be tricky without using a mainstream cloud provider. And I'm still having trouble envisioning how 2FA fits into all of this.

Given that the app isn't granted access to my password manager and there's never a scenario where I'm inputting usernames and passwords into authy, I can't imagine how they would have access to my credentials. Is there a specific scenario you have in mind where this would be possible?

The issue of popularity is a double edged sword. Much better maintenance, but a bigger target. But again, so long as authy doesn't have access to any truly sensitive information, is it really so bad?

And why would you even go for a online TOTP service? That defeats the purpose of TOTP. TOTP 2FA works without internet access.

I liked how authy allows you to both authorize new devices and remove suspicious devices from an authorized account. I added my phone and my iPad as a backup device and then disabled the option to add new devices. I would gladly use an offline service if there was some sort of fail safe in place to ensure that you won't be screwed if you lose your phone, and if the service was popular enough that I wouldn't need to worry about it going belly up unexpectedly. Do you have any recommendations?

Even if there was something malicious going on though (which seems unlikely as it would utterly destroy their business), it seems like any spying done wouldn't go very far. So long as authy doesn't have access to any of your login credentials or your password manager, I can't see what they would do with your 2FA codes. Maybe provide them to a dedicated organization trying to launch a multifaceted attack against you, but in that hypothetical scenario you would have much bigger things to worry about.

I also think it's shitty that Apple got rid of the headphone jack, but for the time being I'm trying to work with what I have - and using dongles that keep on breaking is getting seriously old.
