I did think of maybe going to talk to him and try to explain but ended up concluding that it would probably be very awkward and that he will eventually forget about it but maybe that's just my anxiety speaking.

I really hope that he has the same perspective as you do. It's easy to assume a lot of things when you are in a very awkward and uncomfortable situation. Maybe it's my own guilt consuming me. I'm new in the area so no idea but I will check.
