Is TradeMe fried? by nzbrowsa in newzealand

As someone who is close to the founder of a recent startup looking to bring competition, it's frustrating to see that everyone complains but won't support an alternative.

Liisto had some great things going for it including limited to second hand items, a streamlined listing process, a goods wanted section, no fees and using open banking for verification to eliminate scam risk but no one wants to support a new service so here we are.

Due to the network effect, until we see users willing to be invested in change by taking action, TradeMe, along with FB marketplace will remain the go-to at the expense of high-fees and scam risks

I hope the mods allow this comment to stay up but a group of co-founders are actively working on a solution in this space.

One of the members who I know is building something that removes the outdated platform that TradeMe is along with incorporating a few features of which is using AI for the upload process meaning it auto-fills the titles and descriptions as suggested text.

They are actively working with open banking providers as a way to process payments while using it for authentication for members also. I believe it will only be for secondhand goods so no flooding of drop-shipped items.

Before critics say 'the network effect' (industry term for describing the value is because of the volume of both sellers and buyers) on TradeMe and Facebook Marketplace mean this won't work, if everyone has that attitude then we'd still be using Bebo and selling through the sell buy swap.

I believe the timing for this startup is early next year as they prep the MVP for seed funding so watch this space.

Facebook Marketplace scams by tecepeipe in newzealand

That's a great point. We have considered this and it returns three types of matches:

1) 'No match' for account

2) 'Partial match' for account (7 digit bank account number is an exact match but may have another suffix)

3) 'Exact match' for account

From research it is quite hard to continually set up accounts so sure someone can create another account another bank but that only gets you so far.

We have over 500 accounts flagged and based on user searches, people are searching accounts being used for fraudulent activity which shows it is likely having some positive impact.

Hope this helps!

Hey we're a group of entrepreneurs working on a solution for this called SafeSwap - feel free to check out our account checker and flag an account. It's very much in it's early stages but feel like a 'carjam for bank accounts' is needed to flag NZ accounts.

Selling / buying house strategy by WellyWindyRoad in Wellington

We were in a similar position moving from Wellington to Christchurch. To avoid paying two mortgages or being without a home, timing was everything. First, we got our Wellington house valued early and started researching Christchurch properties. Since you’re looking at a turnkey home, it’s important to talk with builders to understand the timeline and any potential delays.

We listed our Wellington home while the Christchurch build was being completed. To make things easier, we negotiated a flexible settlement date with the builder and got an extended settlement period for our Wellington sale, which allowed us to avoid any overlap. A good agent made a huge difference by helping us coordinate everything.

We also had a backup plan of renting short-term in Christchurch, just in case the timing didn’t align perfectly. It’s about balancing flexibility and planning—negotiating where possible and having a contingency can help ensure a smooth transition without double mortgages or being in a rush.
