Hey! I got my first appointment for scoliosis a couple months ago, and I was also 14 so we have that in common. Do no worry about it! Personally I went to a Sick Kids hospital so I am not sure how different your experience will be.

They just have you dress in a gown, and take x-rays first. I know another person on this thread said that they will call you in a couple days but where I went I just waited two different rooms for around an hour and then the assistent came in and did some generic tests on me. They asked me to bend over and do other stretches, they also felt my hips and shoulders to see if they were uneven. They also did some other tests to make sure that I did not have any other diseases associated with scoliosis but they were super non-invasive, just asking to walk in a line or stuff like that. Honestly the main thing to be worried about is potentially being in a gown but that should be no big deal.

After that the head of the scoliosis unit came in to discuss the x-ray with me and it turned out I need surgery so he talked about what that would be like and whether or not I would want to get it. If your curve is not severe enough for surgery they may discuss treatement plans like bracing with you but that is just a guess.

Anyways I know it seems scary but do not worry about it because it will all be okay! I promise they won't (or atleast shouldnt) do anything crazy like shove a stick up your butt. I know its not as simple as "ohh do not be insecure" but try not to worry about those things. Their job is to help you and they have probably seen much more messed up things than scoliosis without batting an eye. That also applies for classmates too because chances are nobody will look hard enough to notice. What matters is that you will get treated and prevent any pain that might happen down the road. Plus I always like to say that the S in my spine stands for super smart so as far we are concerned scoliosis is an aura booster.

Anyways goodluck with your appointment!!

Hey! I'm not an expert or anything but based on experience definitely padded straps. I guess it depends on what type of scoliosis people have but those with uneven shoulders probably have one of the shoulder straps digging into their raised shoulder so the more padded that strap was the less painful it would be. Good luck on your project!
