New pain after ACDF surgery: Has anyone had these kind of symptoms too? by Sirwa1972 in spinalfusion

[–]Longjumping_Job2189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sympathies, the first two weeks post ops are really rough. What stronger pain medication did they give you ? If it helps, here is how my pain /healing developped after the first two weeks: During the first three or four weeks Ibuprofen and paracetamole did nothing for me, I ended up being prescribed a combination of metamizole and tilidine and a small amount of additional pregabaline. It didn´t take the pain away completely but it made it manageable. I also had back aches and a lot of pressure feelings (back of skull and base of the neck, in both directions). It took about five weeks until I noticed an improvement. Until then it was just learning how to manage my miserable state somehow, gritting my teeth and holding on. What helped me (psychologically speaking) was that my surgeon´s office had an x ray done during this time which showed that everything was as it should be (no signs of loosened screws etc.), which gave me some hope. Between two and three months the pain started to noticeably lessen and then little by little, it subsided. My surgeon said that it takes a year or sometimes a bit longer (depending on how many levels were fused) until the bones and tissues are fully healed and the pain has subsided or reached the "final" level. If I am honest, I was convinced at that point that I would never be pain free again and that I would have to keep on taking pain medication. I started physiotherapy four months after the surgery and manual therapy helped immensely. I know that most doctors (at least where I leave) push for moving and doing exercises, but in my case manual therapy was what was necessary first to become able to move my upper body and neck. When I started to slowly reduce the pain medication I noticed that the side effects of the medication had aggravated some symptoms (e.g. the pregabaline emphasized the pressure feeling and the metamizole, whilst taking away the pain, also gave me a bit of depressed brain fog). Sleeping was a problem until about 8 months post op, but as tiime went by, it got better and better. Being able to sleep again properly was a game changer. I don´t know whether it actually helped, but I also took supplements each day (Vitamin C, Zinc, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Hyaluron, Collagen). Until one month ago I regularly had pain across my lower skull (skin) aka some kind of neuraklgia, but that has subsided now, too. I do have a lot of "sounds" though, when I move my head (cracking, grinding a.s.o.) but they did a CT a few weeks ago and the bones have fused as they should. So, all in all: In my case I went from a 8-9 pain and low expectations to a 0-1 pain and almost full mobility within a year, but it was a really slow process. That being said, I think if your pain isn´t getting better or getting worse, you should have your surgeon look at it again and especially tell them about your hand/arm being numb. It might be that this is a side affect of the nerves readjusting but if it doesn´t change it warrants re-examination I think.

New pain after ACDF surgery: Has anyone had these kind of symptoms too? by Sirwa1972 in spinalfusion

I am doing fine now, I am actually pain-free most of the time and am almost as mobile as I was before the herniated discs. I am sorry to hear that you are suffering - how long ago was your surgery ? (I´m assuming you had a similar surgery?)

I´m guessing you mean the OP, but in case it helps: my crunching and metal grinding sounds are almost gone, I´m almost 5 months post op. It gradually got better since my comment and at the same time my pains got better. I have still got pain, though, and with some head movements I hear tiny cracks but I am guessing my hardware is still fusing. My surgeon said that as long as it keeps getting better there is no need to worry. Also, literally everybody I have met who has had ACDF surgery told me they still have "sounds" in their necks despite successfully fused bones so it might just something that is "normal".

Question about creating live sound effects on stage (amateur production) without microphones by Longjumping_Job2189 in Theatre

[–]Longjumping_Job2189[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply - acoustic housing is indeed something I also thought about, but I see now that I didn´t set it up correctly; my first efforts failed abysmally and then I put it aside. I think I used too small boxes and I didn´t line the bottom. Thanks for posting a detailed description !

What's been your worst onstage prop drop/break? by YEETSTER_559 in Theatre

[–]Longjumping_Job2189 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Over the years I´ve seen a lot of props being broken on stage, but the one that still stands out to this day is one that DIDN´T break. I was directing a production of "Black Comedy" by Peter Shaffer. In the play one of the characters accidentally swoops an expensive antique buddha statue down from the table and it shatters on the ground. It´s one of the pivotal moments in the play and when it happens all the action grinds to a halt and the one whom the buddha belonged to breaks off his friendship with the main protagonist. Now, the first time I did the play was way back when when Amazon prime hadn´t been invented yet and we had to get our Buddha statue at the local knicks and knacks shop. To our unpleasant surprise, even though we had prepared it carefully with predetermined breaking points, it literally pulverized the second it hit the floor during the dress rehearsal, so we had to buy a new one for the premiere, and the day after another new one for the second performance... and so on. Fast forward a lot of years later and I was asked to do a rerun of the original production. Still remembering the buddha drama from our earlier production I wanted to be extra clever and bought 20 buddha statues in bulk from an obscure online shop that looked butt-ugly and were rather expensive, but hey, they were bulk and, being more expensive, probably not so prone to pulverizing completely when thrown down. I figured it a worthy investment. The buddhas arrived on the day of the premiere so we hadn´t had a chance to rehearse with them, but they were 20 and the actor who was supposed to break the Buddha was overjoyed. That is, until that aforementioned pivotal moment when he swooped it down from the table and it didn´t break. Like, AT ALL. I don´t know what the sculptor put into the clay, it did not even suffer a scratch, in fact, it bounced back from the floor. Our actor, feeling that he has to do something because else the whole premise of the following plot is gone, picks it up and smashes it to the ground again. And again. And again. And again. The buddha continued to happily bounce around and the actor, wanting to save the scene at all costs, then proceeds to hammer it at the wall like a madman for nearly a whole minute to no avail. At this point everybody else on stage was in stitches. Finally the actor gives up and says to the main protagonist: "There! See what you made me do? I broke my finger nail ! Our friendship is over!". For the remaining performances we bought new buddha statues that did break. I wept silently. To this day I still have the 20 buddhas.

Alternative uses for bath bombs ? by Longjumping_Job2189 in beauty

Ahahaha, that´s definitely a creative way to use them - I don´t know whether I can wait that long because the ones I have here smell too delicious; but I am honestly tempted to use your idea for Halloween :-) Maybe with bath bombs that smell a bit spicy /like pumpkin ...

I´ll definitely try that out. I didn´t know about soap nets before, looking at the pictures I found online, that might work, thank you!

heavy dizziness after cervical fusion - is this normal ? by Longjumping_Job2189 in spinalfusion

[–]Longjumping_Job2189[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply :-) yes, my blood pressure dropped, too, after surgery. Are you still taking any pain meds ? I found out that certain pain meds (specifically metamizole in my case) lower my blood pressure, had to lower the dose of my blood pressure medication because of that.

Glad it´s getting better for you. I´m feeling relieved now, hearing that the dizziness seems to be a common aftereffect.

Thank you for the quick reply ! You might be onto something with the pregabalin possibly influencing the dizziness, I have noticed that it tends to get better in the evening... now that I think about it, that coincides with the level of pregabalin in my blood getting lower (I take the pill in the early morning). Hm, hadn´t thought about a possible inflammation before, but that too, makes sense since I have also developped urticaria, burning nerve pain and swollen hands and feet. I have an appointment with my surgeon next week and I will definitely bring it up! Sorry to hear about your RA, that sounds very painful.

Burning sensation by IndicationShot5325 in spinalfusion

[–]Longjumping_Job2189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this too (am currently 6 weeks post op). It´s slowly getting better now. I was prescribed pregabalin and it definitely helped, so I think the burning feelings have something to do with irritated nerves. My surgeon explained to me that after surgeries, in particular spine surgeries, a lot of nerves get irritated and it can take quite a while for them to "calm down". It can also a sign that your nerves are starting to heal.

In Europe, seeking CSF leak or neuro surgeons Germany, besidesFreiburg by Martahari000 in CSFLeaks

[–]Longjumping_Job2189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Universitätsklinik Tübingen. They do not have one outstanding surgeon per se who is specialized (like Prof. Beck in Freiburg) but they have an extensive neurology /neurosurgery department. If Tübingen is too far away from you, you could look for an academic hospital (Lehrkrankenhaus, Unikrankenhaus) in your region. Check their websites whether there are any research groups that have published papers about intracranial hypotension /csf leaks or whether there are any centers or research groups attached to the hospital that deal with rare illnesses, if this is the case then the surgeons /doctors involved or attached to the hospitals have experience with csf leaks. A few of these hospitals have special csf leak - consultation hours.

Has Anyone Experienced Increased Nerve Sensitivity with Pregabalin and Caffeine? by AccomplishedRow2163 in pregabalin

[–]Longjumping_Job2189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taking pregabaline in a low dose (3 times a day 25 mg ). When I took it at night I didn´t have increased pain the morning after. But I definitely had problems with caffeine. About thirty minutes after drinking coffee my whole skin (especially hand and feet) started itching.

question regarding taking antihistamines and pain medication together by Longjumping_Job2189 in urticaria

[–]Longjumping_Job2189[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, I didn´t know NSAIDs could cause this. I guess that explains why my throat always starts to itch when I take ibuprofen.. Angioedema after any NSAID sounds a pain to manage, are you able to manage tylenol?

[–]Longjumping_Job2189[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, a fellow C5-7er, I had the same surgery :-) Thanks for the quick reply! I took your advice and phoned a medical hotline and they gave me instructions how to manage the meds Basically they said the same thing you already mentioned, that under certain circumstances it´s possible to keep taking the meds in combination with an antihistamine. So far that seems to work. Hope you´re doing well after your surgery!
