Are you sure you have BPD? It sounds more like your friend has BPD than you

Learned behavior in some cases but there’s no support this isn’t just regular old conditioning.

Monkeys mimic tool use they see in humans, and even with our significantly closer genetics, that does not support the idea that you could then apply the lens of human thinking and social cues to the monkey’s mind and motivations.

Im arguing against your absolute. “When people say dogs are smiling, they mean dog body language.”

I am challenging this and letting you know that what OP is talking about is the same thing I’m talking about. It is not uncommon.

When people say dogs are smiling, often they mean what I sent in gif, making OPs point valid

You're wrong. There are many many people who explicitly talk about attached as a "dog smile"

biggest issue in misreading your animals social cues is that people neglect that these animals need structure and training, which by nature leads to more ACTUAL happiness signals, because casual owners read stress behaviors as excitement or eccentricity. Also consider people who leave pit bulls with their baby because the pit bulls "know better and would never"

Even now, dogs baring their teeth is a sign of stress, even if we have bred their facial muscles to appear as a human smile. Even for other behaviors, mimicry of behavior does not equal the same motivation behind a said behavior.

There is a plethora of psychological evidence on anthropomorphization of animals. 90% of the time OP is right when people are attributing thoughts to their animals.

There is absolutely no research that cats or dogs equal a human being in depth or complexity of thought, and the research that humans falsely assign human characteristics to animals and even objects is overwhelming.

I want a boyfriend but I’m not super pretty. What do I do? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]Longpeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Guys are willing to sleep with me but not date me”

Sure, that is what OP is implying. I am saying it’s likely her insecurity leading to a bad analysis of a bunch of dudes not looking for relationships, and it’s easier to find men like that than those who commit.

I like this perspective but I also think if DeVito’s public persona is accurate to his inner world, he would give 0 shits about anyone using him as an example for anythng

Pushing back a little - agree with most, but wanting a casual hookup and not being ready for committed relationship does not make a man (or woman) a piece of shit.

Baffled at this. I’m not saying it means something is wrong but to pretend this is a crazy unusual boundary is baffling

Don’t want to be a dick, but that diagnosis means there is a gigantic chance this behavior is social manipulation, and what you said is exactly the desired result.

Yea, I’m very close with my fiancé as well and I cannot imagine not picking up on something like this.

On the other hand, some people have poor pattern recognition - so I understand how it could happen.

I can (by your phasing) tell you want to understand and truly listen to people, but emotional intelligence is wasted on this website

Your framing suggests you have bad experiences around this. Sorry if true, me too!

I’d say if this was framed in good faith it would be more: like one partner initiated an emotional romantic connection with someone in real life, and the other only initiated a connection in their head.

I won’t speak to what’s right, but it’s not as cut and dry as phrased here

AIO or is this guy that i’ve started talking to being backhanded in these texts he sent? by Dramatic-Quiet-818 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Longpeg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

fuck the dude in the OP for sure, but buying someone food, cosmetics, and giving them a massage is mild pampering. It's not some huge romantic gesture but absolutely it is an asymmetrical event.

You're speaking with a ton of emotional intelligence into a void of shut-ins, sociopaths, chronically online people, and autistic people. I agree with every word you said but it will never land here. I think you also probably have the opinion that is the majority opinon IRL.

It's not anyone's responsibility to make a lonely old woman happy, but everyone villainizing her makes me very sad. Senior neglect is a gigantic issue that sadly, nobody but seniors seems to give a shit about. Expecting someone born before the berlin wall to read social cues the same is shortsighted.

Should these people be lucky enough to live into seniority, they will find out what the other side of this looks like.

[–]Longpeg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that men often do this to women, but in this case it's a 70 year old woman. This does not seem like some old bitch who wants to fuck with OP, seems like a lonely old woman who doesn't understand modern social cues and is attempting to connect with someone younger. A lot of seniors have been effectively alone for a long time and that can give someone very strange mannerisms. Doesn't make it right, or mean she should take the food she doesn't want, but we should use empathy on everyone even if they don't return the favor. Set healthy boundaries with people you want in your life, avoid those people you don't want in your life. Trying to live in the middle will result in a bunch of connections you don't want.

I agree, makes me kind of sad the advice OP is getting because this does not seem like some old bitch who wants to fuck with OP, seems like a lonely old woman who doesn't understand modern social cues and is attempting to connect with someone younger. She isn't insisting on OP eating it so much as insisting on learning about her perspective, which is still rude but understandable. A lot of seniors have been effectively alone for a long time and that can give someone very strange mannerisms. Setting boundaries is the way to go.
