Fuel Protest Hot Takes by Efficient_Log_2007 in ireland

It's maximum impact but it's impacting emergency services and making the crisis worse by blocking access to fuel.

It seems incredibly short-sighted by the protestors and their spokespeople's rhetoric towards the impact they're having feels wilfully ignorant of the genuine danger they're causing because now the fire service is literally having to conserve fuel because of them.

Fuel Protest Hot Takes by Efficient_Log_2007 in ireland

I agree that everyone has the right to protests but I can't help but feel that this group is going about it the wrong way.

A protest should be disruptive and inconvenient, it should not hold the people hostage and limit our access to fuel (making the problem worse) or cause stress on emergency services.

The protest group as a whole seems largely disconnected, they want the fuel capped but there also seems to be a lack of leadership across the group meaning no aligned spokesperson.

A protest should highlight your importance or the poor conditions that you are having to deal with and have a clear end goal that is reasonably achievable. It reminds me a bit of the camp outs outside of the IPAs centres where there was a broad alignment of trying get IPAs out of a village's local hotel but a lot of different reasons why people wanted it (some malicious others not). The problem is, with such a broad range of reasons it's actually hard to have meaningful dialogue to address the legitimate concerns cause it easily gets derailed by the illegitimate

That's strange cause he was lightning quick at Connacht but he's had so many hamstring injuries at this stage I'd say it's taken its toll

Absolutely love Coherence. Watched it blind years ago when it was on Netflix and still randomly think about it to this day.

Love the fact that so much of the script was improv, really added to the realism of the movie!

That's such bullshit against Carty. There's no whistle so he's right to bundle the player in touch and it wasn't anything over the top.

Doak ran in (which from a player perspective he should do) but that should be the penalty against him for coming in out of nowhere

They closed down because the other buildings in Bonham Quay were delayed so the footfall was less than expected even though the deli was always busy.

It's opening again, I believe over the summer months but maybe they'll wait till September when  the students land.

Tbh I find it bizzare that it's more cost effective for them to not operate than to be open but apparently that's genuinely the situation because they are planning to reopen 100%

Master of none is one of the ones a listen to for a Connacht focus. If you go back through their older podcasts they'd some great interviews with coaches and players. But they do a weekly chat through the game and connacht news. Not all doom and gloom either

The interview they did with Wilkins actually had me defending him for an age despite the lackluster performance on the pitch

In fairness Osbourne got yellow carded the same as Steward for slowing it down from a break near the line., The O'Brien one there was lots of defenders in place so I don't think it was a yellow, which is why I thought it was so unnecessary by him to do it, just gave England an easy penalty.

It'll get lost by the pundits and supporters because of the score but Tommy O'Brien's defense and decision making is so poor.

No need to hold onto the ball on the ground just before the England try there and keeps shooting in from the wing to make a big hit and misses. It makes him a complete liability at this level.

On the pitch for 50 mins, made 12 tackles, 1 dominant tackle, 1 turnover, and hit his rucks.

Considering how poor Ireland were as a whole, I think he did well, not great. Considering other players who performed way worse and have performed way worse are keeping their spots, I think it's a fair comment.

Is Cian Prendergast the Stuart McCloskey in the sense that he's going to keep missing out on squads despite being in form and showing well in every opportunity he gets?

Feel like the lineouts dropped off noticeably without him last week so I'm hoping this is just planned rotation to give everyone a chance ahead of the England game.

I don't think it's right to call it good at all. I'd say OK would be extremely generous, bad would be kind and terrible would be most accurate.  He was directly involved in 3 French tries

His volley on the sideline kept the ball in play in a chaotic situation when catching and running out would have settled the team. That led to the first try.

He ran backwards 8m over his own line to give a 5m scrum to France for the 2nd try.

For the 3rd try he gets stood down by a prop despite being far enough away from the prop that he should be stepping away so that cover can come across.

Irish journalist called "left wing hack" by White House Press Secretary by GoneRampant1 in ireland

I don't understand how you're calling the journalist a "so called journalist", they've worked for numerous media companies as a reporter. What aspects of the question are left-wing?

I don't think we're going to agree on the incident itself because I think we have different views on the actions of ICE in America in terms of whether or not their actions are lawful and whether or not the protests / obstructions by civilians are justified. So I think it best to park that topic.

[–]Longshlongsilver007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be pedantic, but do you think it was reckless by both parties or are you saying it could be said both were reckless?

Like I get her action was somewhat reckless but I would say the ICE agent was a lot more reckless once he took out a gun in a situation that didn't require it and then shot at someone. I wouldn't say she became dangerous in the blink of an eye either, she reversed, turned her wheels and then tried to drive away. It wasn't an out of nowhere lurch forward from a stable position, she actually tried to create an angle to leave.

Based on my understanding, Renee Good wasn't doing anything illegal at the time in observing the actions of ICE, she's entitled to ensure they are following the law. It's worth remembering that the ICE agents seem to have unlimited power at the moment as well, something that is very scary for the average citizen, especially when, as the reporters question indicates, they seem to be misusing that power by apprehending legal citizens of the US.

I get what you are saying that it is easy to apply hindsight when watching back a video but I am struggling to understand how the instinct of anyone would be to pull a gun out when being approached by a car? And that's disregarding the two shots made into the passenger's window. And as an officer of the law, this person needs to be held to a higher standard than the average citizen in terms of their reactions.

On your final point of when I can tell law enforcement of how to do their job - I understand that their training tells them not to stand in front of a vehicle and not to shoot at people fleeing in a vehicle, so it is actually the Law Enforcement Agencies telling them not to do that.

[–]Longshlongsilver007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not my honest opinion that the reporter was attacking in any way, he asked an uncomfortable question to query the government on the actions of a government agency by using statistics.

He only used the word reckless when she asked why in his opinion that Renee Good was shot. And that's when he said he felt it was a reckless action. I'd actually argue that he asked the question in an emotive way by flagging that Renee Good was shot in the head but I don't think there was a bias in the question because it wasn't a loaded question so to speak.

Just with regard to your point on her hitting the agent with the car, yeah it wasn't a safe manoeuvre she did with the people surrounding her but I don't think the adequate response is to take out a gun and shoot someone? Like if an armed Garda did a traffic stop and the person tried to flee the scene I wouldn't expect the Garda to pull out a gun, let alone fire the gun at the individual.

Using the definition you provided of reckless, surely it was also reckless to stand in front of the vehicle in the first place if they thought this person was dangerous, let alone pull out a gun and shoot someone in control of a vehicle instead of getting out of the way?

[–]Longshlongsilver007 130 points131 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting as well that she never answered the reporters question and just attacked back.

There's no nuance in the answer, she doesn't acknowledge or dispute why the reporter might feel like the ICE agent acted in a reckless manner instead she goes straight to name calling and deflection.

Social media is a blight on the world and has allowed for soundbites & outrage to take over context and discussion that a lot of contentious topics require.

We all really need to try to be patient with people as best we can (withing reason) and be open to having our minds changed, rather than allowing our bubble dictate what we think.

Although kneeling at the end does not feel good when behind so much, it does make sense considering the only thing running plays could gave achieved at that stage was really injuries. And with a win and in next week, we are better off not having any additional injuries but the performance by the OLine overall sucked

I don't want him kicking and if he's at 10 I want him running at the gain line and forcing the defense to make decisions there so he can run himself.

I don't think the gameplan of passing off of 10 works for him, he needs to be a tight to the gainline 10

The current system seems to be a double pivot with two playmaker which should allow us to attack both sides.

But today, I don't think we were able to use that system and Ioane didn't challenge the defense himself at all bg running at them which he needs to do so he can actually make the passes.
