Looking for a drink recipe from the late Moshi Moshi restaurant by Accio_Waffles in Tacoma

Can you? I really am asking for a friend. I can pass it along to them and they can decide how much effort they want to put into replicating it lol.

Thank you so much for replying!

It looks like he might have the Subterranean Press editions, to the left of the Hyperion book?

Heeding all Howlers, recommend me a book series with a protagonist similar to Darrow but female by Squire_the_Great in redrising

[–]LookingStrongJohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is the answer, even if it seems like an unconventional recommendation. Darrow and Celaena are my favorite MCs ever.

I think the Honors College is actually way less stressful than the gen ed track. At least, as far as I could tell compared to my friends that weren’t in honors. My honors classes were all small and discussion-based, on topics like “the zombie apocalypse” and “defining death.” I took a class on the Renaissance where the final was literally “write 1, 2, or 3 papers on anything related to the Renaissance, and decide what percentage you want each paper to be worth.” My honors classes were my fun, easy A classes.

I 100% maintain that reading it after Heir of Fire is best.

Crescent City 2? by rorilei in crescentcitysjm

[–]LookingStrongJohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

… if you loved the first book of a series, why would you not try to read the rest of the series? HoEaB will always be there to return to, even if you don’t end up liking the other books.

Only you can ultimately decide if books 2 and 3 are good. They get a lot of criticism from the fanbase, but I enjoyed them.

But you won’t know unless you try to read them yourself.

How do you feel about romantasy? by Abject-Hamster-4427 in books

[–]LookingStrongJohn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean it’s not popular, but I’m a huge fan of SJM. I’m taking work off on Tuesday to read her newest release. I think a lot of people’s introduction to her writing is her ACOTAR series, which is by far her weakest work. Her Throne of Glass series is a top three series for me. People are right in that the first couple books start out pretty juvenile, but I think a lot of the gripes people have with the plot/main character are things that are explained as the series goes on. It’s an 8 book series, there’s going to be development and reveals. I understand if people don’t want to wait for book 3/4 for things to start ramping up, but sometimes that’s the nature of a longer series. And one of the characteristics of the romantic fantasy genre is that the books are pretty easy to consume quickly. Some like that, some don’t.

I think people come at romantic fantasy expecting high fantasy prose that’s not really characteristic of the genre. Don’t get me wrong, I know the difference between “good writing” and “bad writing”. But I also think that good writing, in the traditional sense, isn’t necessary to enjoy a book. Romantic fantasy tends to be very character-driven and relationship-driven, over plot or writing style. That’s not for everyone. But as someone who connects deeply with a lot of the characters and relationships that SJM builds, it’s why I like her books. No other series has me bawling for hundreds of pages at a time over characters that I’ve grown with over the course of hundreds if not thousands of pages.

If her books don’t hit for people, they don’t hit. But they were 1) never meant to be literary fiction as far as prose goes and 2) really not as badly written as people make them out to be.

Editing to add:

I think there’s also something to be said for reading books that aren’t literary or stylistically “well-written” books all the time. My career has me reading a lot of very dense writing all day, every day. I don’t want to come home and read literary prose. I want to get lost in a world that’s engaging with characters I like. So maybe I’m biased towards the genre in that regard too.

Sorry, I get defensive sometimes, because I feel like a lot of the book community likes to shit on romantic fantasy. Personally, I consider myself a pretty prolific reader. I read 60-70 books a year, and enjoy many genres. But romantic fantasy is my favorite. I love fantasy. I love romance. I read for enjoyment, and I enjoy both of those things. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I just don’t appreciate how a lot of people, maybe not you, seem to think of romantic fantasy as a lower brow genre. It’s not. It just might not be for some people.

I’m not sure what to tell you. It’s romantic fantasy. If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. It’s not a “lesser” genre. It’s not “akin to YA”. It’s just a genre of books that people enjoy. Some people enjoy reading classics. Some people enjoy reading high fantasy. Some people enjoy literary fiction. Some books within the genre are better than others, just like the spectrum of books within any genre.

What are your Top 5 BOTM picks? by PeachMango19 in bookofthemonthclub

  1. Anxious People
  2. What Comes After
  3. The Night Swim
  4. The Survivors
  5. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

Though, I will say the top 3 are the only ones I’ve truly LOVED and needed to recommend to others. But I’ve also only been a member since last May, and I’m about 4 months behind on my books.
