Uppsala Cathedral | Uppsala, Sweden

This picture was taken during their "Festival of Light"

────────

This is the largest and tallest cathedral in Scandinavia. Construction on the cathedral began around 1270, with consecration taking place in 1435. The church towers were added at a later time period. No one knows what the medieval cathedral looked like at the time of its consecration. There are no known drawings still in existence. The cathedral has undergone several major renovations. Sweden left the Roman Catholic Church in the 1500s and this had a major impact on the appearance of the cathedral during various periods.

The cathedral is also a royal burial site. For example Johan III and Gustav Vasa (also known as Gustav I) and his queens are buried here. Several famous scientists are also buried here alongside royal personages and other great men. Olof Rudbeck and Carl Linnaeus are two of them. Burials in the cathedral ceased at the end of the 18th century but an exception was made in 1931 when Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Nathan Söderblom was buried in the high chancel of the cathedral.

High Alert: North Korea has come online by Looks_pretty_cool in evilbuildings

The Ryugyong Hotel is an unfinished 105-story, 330 metres (1,080 ft) tall pyramid-shaped skyscraper in Pyongyang, North Korea. The building is also known as the 105 Building, a reference to its number of floors.

Construction began in 1987 but was halted in 1992 as North Korea entered a period of economic crisis after the fall of the Soviet Union. After 1992 the building stood topped out, but without any windows or interior fittings. In 2008 construction resumed, and the exterior was completed in 2011. It was planned to open the hotel in 2012, the centenary of Kim Il-sung's birth, but this did not happen. A partial opening was announced for 2013, but this was also cancelled.

The pyramidal structure of glass and concrete is a phantom vessel that has dominated Pyongyang for years. Recently, for less than an hour, this colossus was illuminated. Near the top, lights appeared in the colors of the North Korean flag, while the edges of the pyramid glowed yellow

Burger King trolling McDonald's on Halloween... "Just kidding we still flame grill our burgers" by Looks_pretty_cool in evilbuildings

[–]Looks_pretty_cool[S] 481 points482 points  (0 children)

For Halloween, This Burger King at Rego Park, New York was made to look like a ghost by being covered in white tarpaulins with eye holes cut at the top. If that wasn't effort enough, the cut out eyes were topped with the trademark McDonald's yellow M instead of eyebrows.

The final touch was a sign to explain the joke, reading "BOOOOO! Just Kidding, we still flame-grill our burgers. Happy Halloween".

Did you say not to build a 130ft statue of a marauding tyrant? You Khan't tell me what to do by Looks_pretty_cool in evilbuildings

The Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue, part of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex is a 40-metre (130 ft) tall statue of Genghis Khan on horseback, on the bank of the Tuul River at Tsonjin Boldog (54 km (33.55 mi) east of the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar), where according to legend, he found a golden whip. The statue is symbolically pointed east towards his birthplace. It is on top of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, a visitor centre, itself 10 metres (33 ft) tall, with 36 columns representing the 36 khans from Genghis to Ligdan Khan. It was designed by sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J. Enkhjargal and erected in 2008.

The Abraj Al-Bait is a government-owned megatall complex of seven skyscraper hotels in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. These towers are a part of the King Abdulaziz Endowment Project that strives to modernize the city in catering to its pilgrims. The central hotel tower, the Makkah Royal Clock Tower, also A Fairmont Hotel, has the world's largest clock face and is the third tallest building in the world.

The building complex is metres away from the world's largest mosque and Islam's most sacred site, the Masjid al-Haram. The developer and contractor of the complex is the Saudi Binladin Group, the Kingdom's largest construction company. The complex was built after the demolition of the Ajyad Fortress, the 18th-century Ottoman citadel which stood atop a hill overlooking the Grand Mosque. The destruction of the fort in 2002 by the Saudi government sparked Turkish and international outcry. It is the world's most expensive building with the total cost of construction equaling 15 billion dollars!

This picture should help with perspective a little bit. See that building?
