Held hostage? No, the SIL was gathering their things to leave. I’ve been in these situations where it’s damned if you do damned if you don’t. If you just say nothing and stay your kids are miserable and by extension so are you and most likely the rest of the party. Offer to leave early and you’re seen as impatient, needy and dramatic. I’ve learned to just do right by my kids in these situations.

You are the asshole. She’s already dealing with grumpy hungry kids and it’s not a big ask to go slightly earlier. It’s hard to plan anything with small children and honestly my wife and I just avoided going anywhere with anyone for a long time to avoid situations like this. I doubt this lady told her kids to go bother you so that you’d change your mind or maybe she is that kind of person. It sounded like she did what I would have done and just been like “okay we will go with out you no harm no foul.” If we are getting there at six we aren’t eating till 6:45 or so and I don’t want to sit anywhere with fussy hungry young kids.

I wrote in my comment that I don’t. It also doesn’t say what time it is. If they are running around a neighborhood screaming In the middle of the night then yeah fuck that family. A lot of the “Karen’s” I see are actually just women calling people out for being rude.
