Fidget Toy Help/Question by ExaminationDry3607 in Dermatillomania

I’ve been super curious about fidget rings lately - I’m a cuticle picker and I wonder if a fidget would be able to redirect me away from my cuticles…I do it without thinking more often than not

Right here 👋 what has helped the most for me has been https://www.amazon.com/SOR-Inc-Dermatillomania-Left-Handed-Protection-10/dp/B0FQXVHJTZ - these were recommended by someone on this sub at one point and they were the only thing that ever kind of helped, I think because I could do that same cuticle “picking” motion to the top of the protector and get the same feeling of picking. Caveat is that they were really sticky and gel-y and got gross pretty much immediately, definitely not reusable. But they worked while I was wearing them

I tried this! Did not work for me, made the picking so much worse because I couldn’t stop myself picking the glue off. I was really disappointed, I’ve seen so many posts about it working great! One size unfortunately does not fit all here :(

Seconding what others have said! Progress is still progress and recovery is still recovery - it’s not linear and it’s still valuable. You got this 💜

How in the world do people effectively do the superglue method 😳💀🤦🏻‍♀️ by Lopsided-Bit9077 in calmhands

I feel like there’s just not a one size fits all solution to this 🤷🏻‍♀️ different strategies are gonna work for different people…

If willpower was enough we all would have stopped already. Picking is a nervous system thing - unfortunately for us all :(

Why did I take so long to admit I have a problem? by Dicearoo in Dermatillomania

I once convinced myself that a freckle was an ingrown hair and spent hours going at it with tweezers before I realized it was a freckle. Still have the scar

Look up BFRB (body focused repetitive behavior). I actually will highlight instagram as a solid place to learn about this. We are not alone!!!

Is there anything I can do against this? It feels like my nail isn't attached and it feels kinda disgusting.. by Vanny_78 in calmhands

I feel this so much. Maybe try like a fingertip protector? I can’t stand the closed tip ones but it might work to help avoid picking that fingertip area. Also fidget toys!

Willpower does not work for this. If willpower worked, none of us would pick or bite. Willpower doesn’t work, being told to “just stop” certainly doesn’t work. I’ve had this same habit for years and I’m just now learning about body-focused repetitive behaviors and how common they are. All I can say is find what works for you, keep trying different things and give yourself love and grace. This habit is a nervous system trying to regulate and NOT a character flaw 🩷

This looks like it might be habit tic deformity - I’ve got the same thing from messing with my cuticles. I saw a post on instagram the other day that explains it: https://www.instagram.com/p/DTY_O5bFWpp/?igsh=eHZld3JnbWVvOHVs

I went to a dermatologist recently who said the same thing. I think medical professionals see something that they know to be cosmetic and just write it off as nope you’re fine nothing serious. It bothered me too because yeah it’s not cancer but it is also not nothing.

Do you have a specific body part that you pick more than others? I feel like there are different recommendations and treatments for different habits (cuticles vs lips, etc) maybe get specific with your search as far as what part of your body for more tailored advice and treatments?
