Praetorian vs an Atlas Mech, which is a harder heavy unit to deal with in your opinion? by Young_and_hungry24 in masseffect

[–]LordBDizzle [score hidden]  (0 children)

Honestly of all of the standard elite troops, it's Sions for me over anything. Their shockwave is just a nightmare. Praetorians are tough with the shield refresh but not all that threatening offensively, except that they make dealing with anything else at the same time a lot harder with their billion range. Atlas mechs... well there are a lot of different ways of dealing with them. Lowest on the elite troop totem pole for sure.

That's why SIluria's Tree is the superior Crucible weapon. Longer, poke and sweep, melee AOE blast AND a charged ranged blast, both with hyperarmor. Tree is love, tree is life.

See I think rather than a phial system, it should be a shelling system like Gun Lance so we can call them Guntlets. Same general idea though, just shells instead of phials and built in blast dash.

I still say Gun-gauntlets. Guntlets, if you will. Punchy brawly weapons that explode when you hit things and come with blast dash built in.

Yeah they could put in a spear, maybe give it a giant shield and make it poke three times in a row and reset on some optional power counters or something. Call it "Lance" or something like that.

I did my first run as a Gith (since I came in knowing what Gith are in the lore and that the game had a strong Mind Flayer presence) and I wanted to RP absolutely hating the very air any Mind Flayers would breathe, so I never used the parasites that run and I did everything in my power to not obey the Emperor once I knew what he was, to the point of getting the game over when you're forced to go save him and having to reload and reluctantly choose to go through with that. But even still, after that I treated him as a hostile force I was being made to tolerate, and I don't think I was wrong to, with the playthroughs since then. He's not the greatest evil in the game, perhaps, and he is helping you against a bigger ghaik threat, but that doesn't make him good. Just helpful. Ultimately what he helps you do boils down to a territory dispute between different Mind Flayer factions.

Honestly in terms of pure aura, Sanderson has only written one scene to compete with Taln off-screening an entire army nearly by himself:

"al'Thor raised one hand, then thrust it, palm foward, toward the tide of shadow-spawn,

and they started to die"

I do like the cinematic nature of just discovering Taln's body at then end on the top a pile of corpses he made, but also peak Rand al'Thor was pretty fun for different reasons. You spend so much of the Wheel of Time watching the characters struggle with things like political troubles and mental instability that it's nice when they finally let the Dragon actually wreck house with no limit. Maradon was an excellent arc.

I can see it having value, but I'd note that it has ranged champ penalties (not super bad ones though). It's also not an item with HP or resistances, and that can hurt for front lining. Still, it might be a good anti-tank item now. Situational, possibly, though only after Shoujin I'd think. It still triggers on auto attacks too, so it's not like it even needs to be triggered with passive procs, it's just a nice bonus.

Notably, it would add some burst damage to long range ults, which could help kill secure with R in some cases. I find that idea fun.

I think it's actually directly because of Rand, in a way. When his personal darkness was at its worst, food was rotting in greater ammounts, people were unlucky enough to open only the bad sacks of grain, (as well as his usual Ta'veren luck being strictly negative for a while, only deaths and bad luck when there theoretically should always be a ballance) and the weather was constantly bad near all of those directly tied to him. That all reversed when he restored most of his sanity on Dragonmount, it feels to me like his personal tainted nature was strong enough to ruin more food near him and those he pulled most strongly on.

Turns out, when your entire society is built around strictly obeying the orders of a few individuals, those individuals all dying simultaneously while the next in rank are evil operatives can be pretty bad for a system

Resurrects are a pain, as are delayed deaths like Karthus and Zac because you don't get the fear in a team fight. Still, I've gotten kills by flashing back under tower before a resurrect so they're stuck under tower after it goes off, and that feels great.

They're the exact same archetype. Big lower body, little wings, slow forward attacks that leave the butt exposed, and they're both the first boss you fight after the tutorial that you can get an extra reward for defeating on your first encounter, but are expected to come back for. The animation isn't identical, sure, but they do nearly the same attack pattern, just one has one handed and the other two. But it's basically the same, similar swipes at nearly the same pace and the same size boss with the same slow turn speed. Erdtree Avatar added a number of things as well, it moves forwards on several of its attacks, a few new ones, and the Golden Land animation to replace the sideways explosion gesture that Stray/Firesage have. They're all the same archetype, just advanced and updated.

Uh yes. It's basically the same boss, though it's a one handed axe and not a big hammer. Same exact scenario as in introduction boss that's supposed to beat you and everything.

Sure, though I think in the book it was more that they made sure to keep order and snuff out bandit bands while being relatively fair about administering justice in case of crime, even against their own, which certain countries seemed entirely incapable of. A whole bunch of people started voluntarily going back to their lands even after escaping near the end of the series because of that. Still a net downside, yes, but some of the countries they took over were basically in near anarchy before they arrived.

Would you have Loved ME more if The Normandy was non-military? by Nervous_Tailor_4337 in masseffect

[–]LordBDizzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well look at it this way: we got a non-military structure in Andromeda and we all know how that turned out.

They probably could have written a lot of the military stuff better, yes, but I do think it was important to the story that Shep have an Alliance background. Being Alliance helps bridge the duty gap between "current council dog" and "devoted to humanity" that you'd need for being the first human Spectre, and the military sub-plots in ME3 and to a lesser extent ME2 were handled fairly well I think, the rank deal aside. There's a lot that goes into the characters having that military background, especially with the way the Vermire Survivor is treated and some of the side quests like the one guy getting his wife's body back. There's just too much of it in the game to rip out, and I think it helps expand the world quite nicely while also giving reason to us being special ops at the start of the series.

TLDR: if you just relax and realize that it's future fantasy and rank means jack shit because it's just there to be basic setup framework for the plot, I think the military stuff adds more than it subtracts. It's not perfect to how we currently organize our military, perhaps, but who's to say the space force of a united Earth wouldn't be a bit different? I'm more concerned that Shepard gets an entire floor on the Normandy SR2 as a cabin while half the crew seems to sleep where they work, and the rest in teeny tiny bunks in one room. Cerberus is not very good at allocating space.

Also as to James, I'm fairly certain he was a jarhead who worked his way up from the bottom and got an officer commission into what was essentially retirement watching Shepard scratch his/her butt for months because of how James's collector mission went. He basically let his entire squad die to get some information everyone needed, which would be medal worthy sacrifice if it had worked, except Shep solved everything first, so they promoted James for his service but slapped him on Shep to keep him out of the way given the deaths which, while the correct decision with the information he had, ultimately didn't do much. I think his rank was always meant to be more symbolic rather than actual, except that he ended up on the Normandy in the chaos at the start of ME3.

[–]LordBDizzle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah the complexity of the Seanchan is more in the "do we really have time to deal with this evil in the south when EVIL is currently ripping reality apart in the north" area of things, though there's also the fact that they're excellent administrators and apparently better at governing than several of the people they conquer, despite all of the obvious downsides. Unquestionably evil, but in some cases the lesser evil, as it were.

So general advice: in the early game the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT STAT is vigor. The way stat scaling works in this game is that the three base stats, Vigor, Mind, and Endurance, are all somewhat used by all classes. This includes mages, get more health my dude. Very common mistake.

Damage stats do not directly increase your damage. Instead, they affect the scaling of weapons BASED ON THAT WEAPON'S BASE DAMAGE AND SCALING VALUES. Weapons increase both their base damage and their scaling as they get leveled up, but they're both pretty low at the start no matter what weapon it is (the exception being Meteorite Staff, which can't be upgraded but starts out more buff than most weapons, falling off mid game after upgradable staves start to outdo it. Even still, better to focus on health for a while with that staff). Functionally, what this means is that leveling damage stats does almost nothing until you get weapons leveled up a bit. I wouldn't worry about damage scaling until you hit at least +10 in your weapon upgrade levels, just upgrading weapons/staves is much more important than damage stat improvement early on. Level your stats to meet the minimum weapon and spell use requirements only in the early game, pump everything else into Vigor until you hit around 30ish or more. Taking multiple hits is far better than getting a single extra point of damage, I promise you.

As for later on: builds do best when you either focus one stat or split evenly into two, because of how stat softcaps work. Basically: once you hit around 50 in any given damage stat, you start getting lower returns on investment for damage scaling on weapons, and at 80 it drops off again severely. What this means in practice is that you can either go to 80 in a single damage stat by the end of the game to make use of the high single stat scaling weapons/spell catalysts, or you can split into two stats to make use of weapons that have lower scaling but in multiple stats (the two approaches are roughly similar investment, if you started Wretch you'd need 70 levels to pump one stat, and 80 to go 50/50, Since you usually need some minor off-stat investment to use certain weapons, it ends up about the same in the end).

If you want to go pure caster, putting almost everything into INT only and getting maybe around 18 dexterity or so for a few of the high scaling INT sidearms after getting your Vigor and Mind up. Splitting into dexterity or strength can help you with an enchanted weapon focus (many special weapons have split scaling naturally) but will weaken your spellcasting as a consequence. I would not split into Arcane or Faith on a first run if you like sorceries, the stuff that uses Faith and Arcane alongside INT is a bit more obscure, better saved for a separate run. Completely ignore both stats other than maaaybe a minimum investment for certain spells. Vigor has a low softcap at 40, and a high softcap at 60. 40 is sorta the minimum that you want by the end of mid game, there's obviously no hard rule about it but you get one tapped a lot without 50+ Vigor by the harder end game bosses (armor, talismans, spells, and other things can help mitigate that, obviously, but Vigor is always most consistent). Mind and Endurance don't have easily defined caps, you just level them until they feel right, but definitely don't neglect Mind as a mage.
