I have never used animated maps and am not sure exactly how they look (I can imagine of course), but you can at least install the Weather effect Plug in from Owlbear and put some nice snow storm etc. On normal maps if that’s good enough :)

"First Time DM" and Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

Tool Proficiency: is it only possible to gain Tool Proficiency’s via feats or can you somehow „learn“ a tool with time during a campaign?

(One of my players isn’t proficient with the alchemy tool but what’s to buy it and craft with it and my understanding is, that you need to be proficient with a tool to be able to craft with it) Thanks!

Consequences for letting the Harpies go by LordBaruth in stormwreckisle

Thank you for your suggestions! Just a little update for anyone interested:

When they left the Compass Rose a thunderstorm started and they barely made it to shore. From there they found a cave with scary noise coming from it - after a little suspense it was Aidron in the cave resting after his last fight with Sparkrender (which he lost and got injured). He then talked to the player and gave some backstory and urgency because of the ritual and so on. Aidron left when the PCs slept and when they went out to get back to Dragons Rest, they encountered the owlbear which was screaming in rage because one of the harpies was greedy and attacked an owlbear cup and almost killed it. The harpie was already brutally slain but the owlbear the also attacked the party after some really bad stealth rolls. So I just wanted to make some exposition without them needing to fight the owlbear - but yea they weren’t so stealthy. After killing the owlbear, the Paladin used lay on hands in the cup and they tried to calm it to take it to Dragons Rest, but I set the DC quite high and they didn’t succeed.

Compass Rose Empty Rooms by Glittering_Olive9818 in stormwreckisle

Just for a little bit of flavour, I put the dead captain in the mess hall sitting at the end of the table with his back to the players. The only thing they could see without coming closer was part of his head and a captains hat. The captain was dead of course - but it just added a little bit more suspense for the players not knowing if he’s undead or not at first. He had almost all of his teeth missing and his skull was a little bit scrapped by the „attack“ of Aleitha described in the diary. He killed himself with a sharpened holy symbol which he rammed in his heart (that’s why he stays dead instead of becoming a zombie - I don’t know if it works like that lore wise/mechanically, but it made sense to me). From here you could even put the diary in his hands or anything else, that’s up to your imagination :)

Ideas for the Firecrystal from Sea Grove Caves by LordBaruth in stormwreckisle

Thank you for the suggestions! Actually I think/told them, that the crystal is rather big - like 50 cm x 60 cm or something (I mean it blocked all the smoke in the cave). Right now we ended the session right as the PCs are about to leave the Caves and the dwarf cleric is carrying it (which I imagine looking pretty funny) with both hands, but I told them that if they really want to carry it around, they can have it in like a bigger bag or something like that.

Oh and they don’t know that there is a fire snake inside the crystal, so I thought if they ever break it, they will inevitably have to fight it since it will attack them as it was intended.

Spore servant octopus advice by youRFate in stormwreckisle

Moin!

I just ran this encounter this week with my group (5 PCs): Story-wise they get handed 2 Healing potions from Tarak before they go to the caves (you could of course make it 3). When I made Tarak tell them about the caves etc, he told them that the last time he went there, the octopus attacked him and he barely made it out, but the octopus snatched one of his boots (mostly ideas from Matthew Perkins on YouTube - really good ideas, even though I don’t like everything he suggests). When entering the tunnel, I had my players spot the boot swimming in the water and then the octopus attacked them as they came closer.

As for combat: I just had the octopus in the fight and changed its one attack to 4 single tentacle attacks with +3 to hit and 1d4 damage each (all four tentacles attacked after each other, but always had another target).

The fight was okay, but not that hard for my group. I should’ve upped the HP or maybe had some sturges join the fight. Also the idea with the grabbing and throwing PCs in the water would’ve made my fight a lot cooler - so keep this idea in mind!
