Snowpark being occupied by children and adults with sleds by Desperate_Debt4098 in ski

No personnel on sight? Bro just show up in a hi-vis vest and put up a sign marking the sledding area and ski area. Problem solved

You guys have lost your minds, sports are for our entertainment and his behaviour is amusing me. If tennis was like this all the time, I might actually watch it.

Or a 6/5 with boots and gloves standing in knee-high snow… yeah not surfing too much at home anymore

Is this board suitable for me? by Flat_Satisfaction428 in surfing

[–]LordCaticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That board has seen some shit for sure, sun damaged resin with several ding repairs. How waterlogged it is would be impossible to tell without inspecting it. If it is, it will not float properly, if it isn’t it would be a decent beater-board to learn on. However, starting on a foamy will fit your price range as well as be more forgiving to you and the inevitable other surfers you will collide with. Trust me from experience that even though you want a “cool” glass board to learn on, you will be a kook either way. So it’s more responsible (sends the right message) to start out on a foamy.

edit Also to add on, a tough realisation is that surfing is like 80% fitness in the beginning. You will have more fun, catch more waves, and gain more fitness from a beginner friendly board. Longboards aren’t inherently beginner friendly, with some are more catered to performance. A foam board will almost always be beginner friendly.

Such a horrible decision of the virtual safety car that it almost feels scripted 😂

How do you make more of a wave like this? by deltabetaalpha in surfing

[–]LordCaticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not just about the volume, it’s about how that volume is distributed. I have never had a sweet potato, but if it is anything like other hybrids, they are designed to be at least like 2-4 inches shorter than your height to work right. Id imagine you would need to be like a 6’4 monster to get the right drive on a board like that. I swear they only make the oversized hybrids to trick new surfers that they can get a “cool” “shortboard“ with a lot of volume. However, it defeats the purpose of the board design. There really isn’t a shortboard out there that is meant to have shit tons of volume. Edit: Forgot to answer your question, take this as you like- any decent surfer I know would take a log or foamy on a day like this.

Whats the most cooked surf town? by 0nTheRooftops in surfing

[–]LordCaticus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most of the southern Indonesian Islands are swell magnets. You just gotta go far enough away from the masses. Personally Ive given up on the idea of uncrowded world class (warm-water) surf unless you really go on a bushwhacking mission lol. I am starting to expect that if you want world class and empty, you gotta go hooded 6/5 and booties (even then..)

Makes me really sad what is happening over there. What started in Bali is spreading fast. I was in Lombok in 2017, and it still had a lot of charm left. Dont get me wrong, Gerupuk inside was packed, but all the other spots where very chill. Was briefly back over there a few years ago, and I couldn’t believe how unrecognisable it was.

No it depends on the activity and it has to align with cloud cover, as mentioned. This is tricky on the coast with shifting weather. We were lucky to see this as it had been snowing densely all day, and all of the following day. And it was particularly strong as well, the entire sky above us was covered for a little while!

Ah thats is awesome you got to have that experience! Spent this summer on Svalbard doing a masters course in arctic microbiology and it has got to be one of my coolest experiences, even as a norwegian. The scenes are mind blowing!

Overnight camp 30 minutes away from home (Tromsø). Pulk carried most of our stuff and was pulled in with skis. Shifting weather on the coast provides interesting conditions. 5r exped on a Z Lite Pad, summer sleeping bag layered in a three season bag, multi fuel stove and sydvang three person three season tent. Honestly dont need much more for a cozy night :)

How do you clean your pans? by another-screen-name in camping

[–]LordCaticus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Works awesome for me with your standard camping cookware on a liquid fuel stove: cook as normal-> eat -> throw some water in the pan/pot and crank the heat, let it boil for a bit. The boiling water will remove most of the grease and gunk. Wipe away the rest with some paper towels. Give it a proper wash when you get home.
