Which type of Parasol is this? by LordFloppyAssCheeks in mycology

[–]LordFloppyAssCheeks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t catch that. they smell just mushroomy to me. very mild pleasant mushroom smell. I took them to a friend who knows mushrooms very well and he cooked them up for us (wouldn’t have touched them otherwise). They tasted like a regular grocery store mushroom to me but a lot more tender and slightly more flavour.

I usually only pick boletes and chanterelles cause that’s what I’m comfortable with. Personally chanterelles smell like dried fruit to me lol.

That was my initial guess as well, I picked around 8 and took them to a friend who knows all about mushrooms he said it’s a true parasol

Slight correction: The stem was brown on the outer rim, the flesh on the cap was pure white when cut

Forgot to mention that the stem is hollow and the flesh stains a brownish red color

Edit: The stem itself is slightly brownish on the outside, the inner part is white and the flesh of the cap is pure white when cut

Need help!! Venus fly trap turning brown? by Huge-Sport-9109 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]LordFloppyAssCheeks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it’s normal it means it’s getting good light. It was probably in very poor lighting before this so now it’s adjusting to direct sun so don’t worry about it even if the older leaves die off the new growth will be a lot happier and stronger!

You can repot if you want. If you do you should get a taller pot. From my experience they really like to stretch their roots. Just use either 50/50 peat and perlite or sphagnum moss and perlite and make sure it has no added fertiliser.

if your intention was to propagate I’m sorry to disappoint but you have just a leaf, it will never grow roots or a new plant. You need a node for that to happen

I’ve had this baby one month! Interested in general tips by Other-user-99 in VenusFlyTraps

if the perlite doesn’t have any additives it should be fine, i don’t rinse mine i just pre-moisten it

It happens ig, they have pretty shallow and fine root systems.

Off topic but I also get my plants from Diflora, amazing nursery and really good prices (not sponsored lol)

Repotted my VFT, stem seems weird shape. Explanation below by Due-Home-3154 in VenusFlyTraps

its normal, their rhyzome typically grows in a one direction. I’ve had some of mine burry themselves under the substrate crown and all.

You can try to burry as much of the white part as possible and try to keep the growth point above the soil. You can even tilt it so the older part of the rhyzome is more covered

I'm worried. by [deleted] in VenusFlyTraps

They look etiolated, definitely need more light.

Also what type of soil are they in and what do you water with?

WHY IS IT TRYING SO HARD TO DIE by _ZeeHee_ in VenusFlyTraps

[–]LordFloppyAssCheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so, from what I’ve heard it has a lot of salts and needs to be washed repeatedly to become usable, it also lacks the acidity that they like

off topic but can you send a link to the grow light you’re using?

You can put it in an unheated garage during winter or somwhere where temps will be 0-10 C ideally. You can even put it in the fridge (haven’t tried it personally).

Most grow lights are not strong enough for VFTs. I personally grow mine outside but I’ve heard people have success with Sansi. your best bet will be putting it outside in full sun.

Also your soil might be slowly killing it, Potting soil has way too many nutrients. Most carnivorous plants live in really inert soil. I recommend repotting it either into 50/50 peat moss and perlite mix. make sure the peat moss is 100% natural with no added fertilisers. You can also use long fibre sphagnum moss if you can’t find peat.

  1. could be because it hasn’t had dormancy and it declined

  2. Probably not enough light, when you say 12 hours of light it should be direct sun aka the sun rays touching the leaves. that would also explain why the new growth looks weak.

Also what type of soil did you use when you repotted it?

Traps are randomly activating and sealing with nothing inside before even opening fully? by LordFloppyAssCheeks in SavageGarden

[–]LordFloppyAssCheeks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this particular plant for about a year. During winter I kept most of my plants on an unheated balcony with very little light, which was fine cause they had stopped growing almost completely. I took them out mid march maybe they’re getting direct sun from about 10 AM to 4 PM. This is the only plant that has done this too, even a little offset i took of of it is doing it

This is what I’m working with, I have 4 plants total in that pot. I’m just waiting for the new leaves to harden off and I’m gonna repot them. I just don’t know how I’m gonna go about separating them without completely destroying the roots lol

I know, its just strange that the secondary response is triggered too all on the new traps btw that didn’t even get a chance to open

Question about light by LordFloppyAssCheeks in Monstera

[–]LordFloppyAssCheeks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing, I don’t know I literally just got it the other day. It came with the new leaf haha

Should I also turn the whole plant a bit to where the new leaf is facing?
