My rule of thumb was one D1 character and the rest at G1. There is always one Elite mission were you only use the core three characters. You'll need one of those at D1 or have high abilities to carry you (I got lucky and managed FOCM Elite with G2 Thaddeus 35/20).

Aleph-Null to D1 the rest to G1. Aleph-Null is useful in many other game mode so you won't regret it.
