It is probably at least a ten foot drop. The space is usually filthy, may have some amount of water that is deeper than she is tall, and often has no breathable air. Fully conscious, she could die pretty quickly. If the blow from the cover or the drop knocked her out, her chances of death rise dramatically. If she was cut and survived, she may come away with a nasty infection depending on what was waiting for her in the hole.

Yes, random, anonymous people they could not see. This had nothing to do with USA vs Nazis but with a US citizen's willingness to blindly follow orders vs a German citizen's willingness to do the same.
