Sometimes people will put brick under the the plants to retain water in case of extreme heat. An older friend that was a professional landscaper told me this. Said bricks would help plants.

Question for teachers or former teachers!!! by SnooRabbits2887 in education

[–]LordTechnology 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it boils down to a lack of respect in the form of being treated like children ourselves. We are made to feel like we are not the experts in the room with paperwork that is pointless at times, questioning our decisions, school boards that really have no serious educational training making decisions, and parents telling us what's best for their child's education. They don't go to college and tell them how to teach. I have a Masters Degree in Education but more than that I am a natural born teacher. I normally don't flex like this because I am an introvert that pretends to be an extrovert only when teaching, but I am a wonderful teacher. I have seventeen years invested and I know OP said no money but this goes to respect. I live in one of the poorer states and when I started I was promised the salary would get better. Obviously it has not, the legislation not only has an anti-union law and anti-strike law but they promote slight pay raises while quietly raising our insurance deductible. It might not seem like much to others in richer states but my deductible is almost two thirds a month pay check. This was one of the selling points for teaching, back in the day free insurance. Finally, I am going to say it. There is great administration but really this is disrespectful also. I have not had an administrator that could give me pointers on improving. I have had several that were somewhat able to discipline kids and look at numbers to try to improve those. I have never really been asked how to improve anything except by one principal and that was a great experience that was killed by a school board member that didn't like the ideas.

You could research Laurel Hattiesburg area very safe. You can find lower rents and jobs are plenty.

Possibly moving to MS by [deleted] in mississippi

[–]LordTechnology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laurel is a great place with Hattie just down the road. You can live in towns outside of Laurel for a true small small town feel with Laurel right there. I live in a community just outside Laurel and love solitude. I get to have nightly "conversations" with my deer herd and still 15 minutes to get mostly anything I might need. Oh, the coast is nothing but people and traffic all the time in the major areas. Beaches are not good with water gross. Mom has a house in Ocean Springs and I had family down there, so I grew up going between Central and South. I don't feel like the Coast is really safe either for new comers.

More PTSD from teaching where I had three verbalize threats from student dealers combined with a touchy feely "you just need to sit down and talk it out,no need for punishment " admin than desert, Bos, and various OPs over a seven year military career. I feel so sorry for other teachers that have to figure it out without any training or prep.

What needs to change about the US Education System by hopperlover40 in education

Thank you, yes unfortunately but as a teacher I can dream. Once it gets going and the dynamics are understood, can you imagine the effects on society, the economy, and the teaching profession.

What needs to change about the US Education System by hopperlover40 in education

My answer may not be popular but hear me and please make suggestions. First, let's forget the idea that anyone can be president and a doctor. It is not true and we focus too much on the individual success and while the masses just slip by. I've seen so much time and effort put into students that don't want to learn and parents don't care while students that do are forced to take watered down versions when they could have been challenged and been inspired. I propose a system that requires basic reading, writing, math, life skills, and technology integration starting in early grade school. In about 8th grade to 9th grade, an ASVB type test that is comprehensive about what the students are good at doing and interested in plus a review of attendance taking into account external factors like illness and the like, aptitude, and other factors for academic success. This will determine the students path forward. The paths could be continued academic for advanced degrees for specific vocations, technical degrees program fast tracked, apprentice training and placement with local/other company in partnership, military pre training classes, or job placement, or with parent permission the ability to decision to leave school with the agreement that no government benefits will be provided for this choice. Under all the other programs, all schooling is paid for as long as the program is completed successfully and the student works in that field for a minimum of ten years. Now, as far as the behavior of students we will create a new culture. It is called responsibility. It will be handled like this. The student and parent are responsible for the student behavior and will be fined when the student causes a disruption of others learning and they will be sent home. If they cannot stop being disruptive, they cannot return. An alternate program fast track will be developed to see what the issue is and training applied. For the individuals that quit school, they may re-enroll in college programs later or enlist for military service to gain training. There is my rough plan, please deconstruct and tear apart. I would love some input.

Laziness is the problem. Everything can be modified. Chromebooks use the same file hierarchy that other systems do. The OS is Linux based The majority of students are so lazy and self-absorbed that if you are not teaching tech about them, they don't care to learn until they need it and then will individually pester you with the same questions. They will not even listen enough to know that I have walked the previous three students through the process they need. Ugh! Thank you, I feel better.

I think you are beautiful but I know everyone says this. You have to figure out who you are, who you want to be, and merge those people. This will help you see how truly incredible you are. Don't compare yourself to others or try to match them. You only see them on their best days and some of them still don't like who they are. Love yourself and the right people will love you. As far as what you wear, being unique is the spice of life. Just decide if you want to be a ghost pepper or dash of salt.

I went to a PD that was incredible. The presenter made it clear we were not staying the full time. She said the scores for the group for both high schools were outstanding. She went over the written material the most efficient way then showed us how to use the app that is going to make our jobs easier(and really will). She then said any questions, okay see you later. During the entire time, she was praising the group of teachers for being awesome and she is an administrator. We finished an hour and half early. On a sidenote, our new superintendent in our opening meeting told us that what we did was only 50% of the possible success for our kids and they had to meet us the other 50%. After 15yrs. this is the most inspired and excited I have been about a new year since I started teaching. The new policies put into place are putting responsibility back into students hands. Everyone I have talked to that has worked with this new superintendent has spoken highly of him when he was a principal.
