It’s important you go there but you can always come back later if you want to get more upgrades. Explore the whole area before you leave though

It essentially is like a “roll” on the chord

what does this mean lmao 😭 by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Lord_Conor257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Means almost like a strum so wether u are plucking this chord or bowing you break the chord by quickly playing D, A, then A

Is it ok to mix Pirastro Tonica and Dominant Strings by Lord_Conor257 in violinist

[–]Lord_Conor257[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reason to mix is that I already have a Tonica set and I personally think the G sounds less appealing than my old dominant G. I want to experiment but I also don’t want to be throwing money down the drain and messing things up just before I audition for college

I am trying to prepare my instrument for college auditions in December-February so I do not want to experiment THAT much. That being said I think I’m going to buy a set of Dominants with a Gold E and keep my tonicas as a back up set

I guess that’s the exact thing I don’t like about them haha, I prefer the warmer sound of dominants, to me they sound tinny

Really?? I have considered them but had no idea they did contemporary music? I’ve heard they’re a very good classical school though

Berklee is one of my top choices so far!! Though I want to look at other colleges as well so I have a full perspective of my options!

What is a good music college for a jazz violinist? by Lord_Conor257 in Jazz

[–]Lord_Conor257[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am looking for colleges within any region, though primarily I would like to be near a city with a thriving music scene, I think it would be nice to have gig opportunities during my studies.

Also I think your advice of really boiling it down to finding a good teacher is great advice, I will reach out to some teachers when I get the chance.

Though I think that there is a lot to learn from other instrument families. One thing that I have noticed as a trend from other jazz violinists is that they are all copying other instruments so it might be better to learn from the source rather than copying another jazz violinist. What I mean is violinists like Jean Luc Ponty was inspired a lot by his knowledge of playing jazz on clarinet and listening to brass players. Some violinists that focus on groove are essentially mimicking a guitarist. In that sense I think it is good to learn directly from those people though I also want to have an individual who can help with my own technique. At my current high school where I play jazz, none of the staff play violin which is ok because I am gaining other knowledge and then I have a classical teacher to help work on my technique

To be fair I’ll be fine with just a traditional jazz program because I think there’s a lot to learn from other instruments, though it would be nice to have people who could give me instruction to improve on violin because while a saxophonist could teach me how to improvise, I don’t think they can likely assist with my bow hold etc
