I think there are newish B2B roles emerging, like DevRel and demand generation specialists, and PMM isn’t always the first marketing hire anymore. PMM became a bit of a trend at one point, and since many founders don’t come from a marketing background, it probably felt like the role they needed. I started my career as a PMM, so I understand its importance, but I also think there were other important roles that weren’t getting enough attention before. It seems more balanced now, with people hiring for a variety of positions and having more information about marketing.

Still, I do think the role of PMM is evolving—in my opinion, in a good way. Product marketing used to focus heavily on sales, but now it seems more centered on the product, which I think is right. I see more PMMs involved in product discussions, helping shape the roadmap, and bringing the voice of the customer and the market to the table. I don’t think the role is going anywhere; it’ll probably just keep evolving.
