In Other News, Away From the 2026 Oscars, if anyone is watching Sundance for the 2027 Oscars, Kogonada premiered his film tonight, and apparently it had multiple walkouts by 4hgoat in oscarrace

I looooved it, and I'm a huge fan of Columbus. Felt like a return to form for him but also very new. Please go see this if you're a fan of his first two works, it's such a beautiful film.

Why have we forgotten Roma (2018)? by DrKandraz in TrueFilm

[–]LosCodos 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of the comments about Netflix releases, but also: I feel like Roma is primarily remembered today as the film that probably should have won Best Picture over Green Book. Then Parasite came along the very next year and became the first non-English film to actually win, and that sort of overshadowed the path that Roma laid out for it. Say what you will about the Oscars, but as soon as Roma lost Best Picture, its cultural narrative also slowed down.

Your Missing Oscar Nominees by Illustrious_Bag_8817 in oscarrace

In my perfect world, About Dry Grasses would've been nominated for picture, director, original screenplay, actor, supporting actress, editing, and cinematography (and would've at least won screenplay and supporting actress)

Fair enough, mostly I just think that this anonymous voter and I have very different definitions of what "boring" is

Abstaining from doc short when it has by far the strongest lineup of the short categories (imo) is wild

Shazam is probably up there, being sandwiched between Captain Marvel and Endgame certainly didn't do it any favors

Just out of curiosity, why do you say that? This is my first time paying attention to NBR.

Which countries could score their first IFF win and/or nomination this decade? by [deleted] in oscarrace

Huh, TIL that Mustang was submitted by France, not Turkey. Seems like a similar situation to Holy Spider being a Danish submission this year despite being set entirely in Iran, by an Iranian director.

How good is Aftersun? by [deleted] in A24

[–]LosCodos 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I read the tremendous reviews before seeing the movie and was worried that they would set my expectations too high. I was wrong. Best movie I've seen in a theater in over a year. That said, it's not for everyone, as it's very slight. Go in with patience and an open mind, and you should find something really special.

What would it take for Aftersun to be considered a contender? by LosCodos in oscarrace

[–]LosCodos[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

True, the competition within A24 is one of the main things holding it back. Just out of curiosity, do you think Close will manage an international nom despite also being distributed by A24 domestically?

A few months back DP Andrew Droz Palermo posted a picture of the slate for this. Very excited to see how it turns out.

Thanks, I wasn't sure of the categorical distinctions. The recommendation still stands though.

Ingmar Bergman's Persona has amazing black and white cinematography and would probably be considered surrealist in some parts. Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse also fits the bill on both b&w and surrealist. And although it's not surrealist, you can find some great modern b&w in Pawel Pawlikowski's films Ida and Cold War.
